Game 2 Round 1

The following took place in an AOLIM chat room November 1, 2004. Due to a technical difficulty in the chat room, the rest of the game had to be played via e-mail (in layman's terms, it's was like playing Net Poker with Net Poker Live! rules). Some of the text of the chat's transcript, including at least one question on which no one scored, was edited. But actual gameplay is not affected and did not change.)

(smooth jazz theme plays)

The ghost of Jay Stewart: From the spectacular Bonus Island Resort and Casino in Gulfport, Mississippi -- where you never know when lightning will strike -- welcome to the card game where high hands can bring high rewards. This is Net Poker LIVE!!!!

TGoJS: And now, here's the host of our show, Doug Morris!

Doug: Thank you, thank you, ghost of Jay Stewart. Hello everyone and welcome to Net Poker Live! Where even here we have to plead "guilty as charged" when accused of not playing with a full deck. (audience laughs) Last time we got together, David Hammond took home CY$14,200. Nice payday. But someone can do much better. We've got CY$100,000 burning a whole in our pocket. It could belong to one of tonight's players. Let's have a nice warm NPL! welcome to Troy Diggs and Mark Sinsabaugh.

TROY
MARK

(audience cheers)

Doug: Troy, you got to play our audience game on the last show. For those who weren't there with us on the maiden voyage, tell us about yourself.

Troy: I'm a news producer in Kansas City for the station without the crappy jingle. In my spare time, I'm way too addicted to The Sims 2.

Doug: Heheh. And I think we all know which "KC" station has that crummy jingle. (KSHB41 Action News, FWIW). Welcome to the game, Troy. And Mark, welcome to our little game, tell us about yourself.

Mark: Well, where do I begin??? In real life, I'm a DSD receiver who bowls three nights a week. I used to be the host of several netgames, I used to have a game show website, and I used to trade tapes (although I might be starting up on that again in the near future)

Doug: Cool stuff. Well, we're certainly glad to see you back in the net game fold. Big difference between Net Poker Live! and Net Poker is we play a best two-out-of-three match -- two rounds of 5-Card Poker followed by one round of 3-Card Poker if necessary. The first player to win two rounds wins the match and the right to play for CY$100,000. Just like Net Poker, we're only playing with the Aces, face cards, 10s and 9s of all suits. And now, time to put your hands together for our dealer... ladies and gentlemen... Dirty Harry!

(audience boos as DH walks out)

Doug: Yes, you might have seen him on that train wreck of a game show $hopper's Casino and we're... uh... happy to have him here. Troy won the right to cut the cards before the first round and now let's see those first cards as they come down the chute...

Doug: ...two Jacks... Jack o' Spades and Jack o' Clubs. At least it's not Jack O'Lantern! (audience boos ) Post-Halloween joke. Anyhoo, first question coming up for 10 points...

In two consecutive episodes of the '80s game show Press Your Luck, Michael Larson...
\ hit only one whammy
\ won exactly $100,000 in cash alone
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(Mark buzzes in)

Doug: Mark.

Mark: hit 1 whammy

Doug: There ya go. (audience applause) You lead 10-0. Do you want the Jack of Spades or Clubs?

Mark: ah, I'll take the spades

TROY

MARK

Doug: This means Troy gets the Club by default and we get two more cards...

Doug: King of Clubs and Jack of Hearts. Someone's getting a pair of knaves after this next question...

In the cartoon series Duck Dodgers,...
\ Porky Pig plays the President of the Universe
\ Elmer Fudd is the engineer for Duck Dodgers' spaceship
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(Troy buzzes in)

Doug: Troy.

Troy: None of the above.

Doug: Righ. (audience applause) Tie game at 10. Which card?

Troy: I'll take the jack of hearts... 'cause I'm at the heart of it, and Action News is part of it...

(audience and Doug laugh)

TROY

MARK

Doug: That gives Mark the King and now we'll get two more cards from Dirty Harry's chute...

(ooohs and aaahs from audience)

Doug: Queen of Clubs and King of Hearts. Getting interesting now. Next question...

President Harry Truman established the "Truman Doctrine" to help...
\ Greece resist Communism
\ Turkey resist Communism
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(Troy buzzes in)

Doug: Troy.

Troy: All of the above.

Doug: That's correct.

TROY
MARK

(audience applause)

Doug: You now have the lead. Which card?

Troy: I will take the king.

TROY

MARK

Troy: OK. Troy's still with a pair of Jacks. Mark has the makings of a straight. Next two cards now ...

Doug: And we have a 9 of Clubs and a Queen of Diamonds. Mark, you can tie the score on this next question...

Jim Carrey and Lauren Holly split up...
\ in the year 1997
\ after two years of marriage
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(Mark buzzes in)

Doug: Mark.

Mark: Two Years of marriage

Doug: Nope. Sorry. Troy, chance to take a bigger lead if you can tell me.

Mark: bah

Troy: I don't think they were ever married... I'll say '97.

Doug: That's right! (audience applause). They had been married for 10 months -- and split up in '97. Which card, Troy?

Troy: I will take the queen. (keep Mark from getting a better pair)

Doug: Strategic move for sure...

TROY

MARK

Doug: ...as Troy leads 30-10, Troy still with a pair of Jacks. Mark needs a 10 for a straight as we bring on the final two cards of the round...

Doug: ...now, the cards are face down for the 15-point blind card question. Chime in with the right answer and you score the 15. Mark, you need to score on this question -- because if Troy gets these 15 points, there'd be no way you could win the round. Big question on the way...

At one point in the 21st century, Adrian Peterson was a running back for...
\ Georgia State University
\ Oklahoma State University
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(Troy buzzes in)

Doug: Troy.

Troy: I have no idea, so I'm going to throw the hail mary and say OSU.

Doug: He goes for the hail mary and... Mark can intercept. Troy's wrong.

Mark: Georgia State

Doug: Nope. Sorry. Will Morris, the writer of this query, just happens to be in the house tonight. Will, tell 'em the right answer.

Will: (from the front row) None of the above, believe it or not. Guys named Adrian Peterson played for Oklahoma and Georgia Southern.

Doug: Tricky question, I know. OK, same blind cards up for grabs with this next 15-pointer...

"The Great One" is a nickname for...
\ the late comedian Jackie Gleason
\ hockey legend Mario Lemieux
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(Troy buzzes in)

Doug: Troy for the round.

Troy: All.

Doug: Nope. Sorry. Mark, another chance to steal.

Mark: Gleason

Troy: OH, geez... :-O

Mark: Gretzky was the Great One

Doug: You're all over it, Mark, and correct for 15.

TROY
MARK

(audience applause)

Doug: Mark, you need to draw a 10 to win the round. Left or right card?

Mark: well, how about the right

TROY

MARK

Doug: OK. We have the cards in place. Mark, let's look at your card first...

TROY

MARK

Mark: well, at least I have *a* chance

Doug: Well, another Queen for one pair.

Troy: It's a decent chance.

Doug: Now, we go to Troy's card. Let's see who wins the first round...

TROY

MARK

Doug: ...it's Troy, he's got 2 pair!

(winning bells; audience applause)

Doug: Troy, we're now going to spin the European Roulette wheel. Numbers 0-36 with no double zero. If the ball lands on 0, we'll pay off CY$5000 which certainly brightens Dirty Harry's day.

(DH gives Doug the "Are you kidding?" look as he walks over to the wheel)

Doug: Or maybe not. (audience laughs) If the ball lands on any other number, Troy, you'll receive CY$100 times the number he spun. Dirty Harry, give it a spin.

(DH spins the wheel)

7
l

Doug: 7 Red for CY$700.

TROY
MARK

(audience applause)

Doug: Mark, you've got to come up with a win to stay in business. Troy, if you win either the next round of 5-Card Poker or 3-Card Poker, you win the game. More of Net Poker Live! after this.

(more applause) (smooth jazz theme plays)
