Video Poker

Now the five questions involving 50 actually come from other themes of questioning we use on Net Poker. We'll start with a question from my favorite theme The Last Word.

I'll give you a false statement. Chime in and make true by replacing the last word.

In an episode of "The Simpsons", Bart tried to claim a 50-point bonus in Scrabble with the word "shazbot".

(Andy buzzes in)

Doug: Andy.

Andy: Kwyjibo.

Doug: That's right.

(ding; audience applause)

Doug: Just some advice -- try not to use that word in the real game.

This next question comes from The Numbers Game. I'll give you a statement that starts with the number 50 and continues with a series of initials and small words. Buzz in and repeat the statement while telling me what the initials stand for.

50 W to L your L

(Eddie buzzes in)

Doug: Eddie.

Eddie: As Paul Simon would say, there must be 50 ways to leave your lover.

Doug: All over it and right.

(ding; audience applause)

Doug: Andy and Eddie tied at 20. Todd, let's see if you can make it a three-way tie.

Next question is modified from our Time Machine theme. Tell me if the following event happened more or less than 50 years ago.

Cheerios is introduced.

(Andy buzzes in)

Doug: Andy.

Andy: More than 50 years ago

Doug: Indeed -- it was introduced in 1941.

(ding; audience applause)

Time now for a question from Three of a Kind. I'll give you three clues and you tell me what they have in common.

50 stars, 7 red stripes, 6 white stripes

(Andy buzzes in)

Doug: Andy.

Andy: All part of the American flag.

Doug: This close to the 4th of July, timely question -- and right answer.

ANDY
TODD
EDDIE

(ding; audience applause)

Doug: All right, even if Todd got this, he'd still go first at the Video Poker screen since he would be tied with Eddie and he's standing closer to the champ.

Final question before we go to the big screen comes from In Other Words. I'll give you a movie title expressed in other words. Give me the exact title.

"That 15.24 Meter Tall Female's Strike"

(Andy buzzes in)

Doug: Andy.

Andy: "Attack of the 50 Foot Woman"

Doug: That's right.

(ding; audience applause)

Doug: Well, on this 50th episode, Andy has 50 points. Eddie's in second with 20. Todd, five cards can make a big difference. Here's D.J. with how.

D.J.: All right, Andy, Todd and Eddie, each of you may take up to two consecutive turns at the video screen. On your first turn, you may select up to five numbers and we'll reveal the cards hidden behind the numbers. Just like we've done the last 49 episodes plus tournaments, we have nothing lower than a 9 hidden.

If you like the hand you've made, take its value in points and pass control to another player. If you want to try to improve your hand, you may exchange some or all cards for new ones.

Doug: Thanks, Deej. Just one pair of Jacks or less takes five points away. Just one pair of Queens, Kings or Aces is worth an additional five points.

Two pair for 10, three of a kind for 15, a straight for 20, a flush for 25, a full boat for 40, quads get you 125 and a straight flush for 250.

Also if you're lucky to get a royal flush in this round, you score 1000 points. And in any round, if you make a natural royal flush, you win a bonus of CY$1,000,000.

(audience cheers)

Doug: Last place goes first in this part of the round. Todd, that's you. Before we begin, tell us about yourself.

Todd: I'm a student from Baton Rouge, LA.

Doug: Baton Rouge -- great city. Let's see if you can draw some great cards. Five numbers, please.

Todd: 13, 8, 2, 22, 1

Doug: All right. Let's have a look at the cards behind the numbers.

(FF reveal sfx)

Doug: Two ladies, an Ace, an King and a 9. If you stopped here, you'd only win 5 more points. Might as well take that second turn.

A full boat would tie Andy. Four of a kind, straight flush or royal flush would vault you into the lead. What's your pleasure?

Todd: Keep the queens, please. I'll take 10,17,18.

Doug: While the straight and royal flushes are tempting, that would be my move. Todd would love to see more ladies. Does he?

(FF reveal sfx) (audience groans)

Doug: Ouch. Ace, 9 and 10. Sorry about that.

ANDY
TODD
EDDIE

(ding)

Doug: Todd, it's possible that Eddie would lose five -- and if that happened, you'd each get one head start letter. Eddie, obviously, is hoping he gains points instead of loses points. Let's shuffle up and cover up.

(cards are shuffled on the video screen; after shuffling stops, the cards are covered immediately with the 24 numbers)

Doug: Eddie, before you play, a word or two about you, please.

Eddie: I am a sportswriter on the colleges desk at a major daily. I live in Northern Virginia with my wife of nine years and son who has just completed kindergarten.

Doug: Congrats to your son. Hope the family's well. Five numbers, please.

Eddie: OK -- 2, 9, 11, 16 and 21, please.

Doug: All right. Let's see how lucky they turn out for you.

(FF reveal sfx)

Doug: Eddie, 2, 9, 11, 16 and 21, respectively, give you the Queen of Spades, Queen of Hearts, 10 of Spades, Ace of Hearts and Ace of Diamonds. If you stopped now, you'd have ten more points for two pairs -- but you would secure second place.

Remember, a full house give you 40 points. Anything better than a full house gives you much more. What's your pleasure?

Eddie: I'll keep da ladies and da rockets and go for the boat. (scattered cheers) Let's see if we can fill it with -- 13.

Doug: All right. If there's an Ace or Queen behind lucky 13, you'll have 40 more points.
