Joker Poker

(smooth jazz theme plays)

Scarlett: The championship's on the line. Robert and Dean play Joker Poker where one of them could win CY$25,000 -- plus a side pot worth CY$35,000. Back to Doug Morris and Net Poker.

(audience cheers)

Doug: All right, Scarlett, thanks a bunch. Well, each of our players has won a round already in this game...

DEAN
ROBERT

Doug: ...and by winning a round, each player ended up CY$2000 richer. But as Scarlett just noted, one of you could become *much* richer by round's end.

Before we get to the end of the round, we have to start the round -- and we start Joker Poker with a little something we call...

DOUBLE MEANINGS

Doug: ...Double Meanings. I'll give you two meanings of a single word and you tell me the word being described doubly. For example, if I gave you...

Distribution of playing cards
Completion of business transaction

Doug: ...then you'd chime in and say "deal". Each pair of meanings is worth 10 points. Then when you each have four cards, we'll play a 15-point pair of meanings with the cards face down. High hand is worth 25 points. Then we race to 100 points in the game-deciding Poker Run.

Robert, you won the first round. That entitled you to cut the cards for this round. First two cards from the top of the deck are coming on down. Deej will tell us what they are.

D.J.: The Queen of Diamonds and the Jack of Diamonds.

Doug: Two face cards up for grabs. Robert, Dean, good luck to you. Here's our first pair of meanings.

Wooden eating utensils
Title of really easy song to perform on piano

(Dean buzzes in)

Doug: Dean.

Dean: Chopsticks.

Doug: That's right.

(ding; audience applause)

Doug: First 10 points of this deciding round go to you, Dean -- as well as the card choice.

Dean: The Queen, please.

Doug: Lady in red for you.

ROBERT

Doug: Robert gets the Jack out of that exchange. We get two more card.

D.J.: The 10 of Spades and the 10 of Hearts.

Dean: Um, let's go with Spades.

Doug: Spades it is....

DEAN

ROBERT

Doug: ...there we are. Both players on a straight draw. Next cards, please.

D.J.: The Jack of Spades and the King of Hearts.

Doug: Another pair of face cards. Another pair of meanings...

Dean: I'll take the King this time.

Doug: Cowboy for Dean and keeping a drive alive for the straight...

DEAN

ROBERT

Doug: ...Robert now with a pair of Jacks. Two more cards, please.

(a few woos from the crowd)

D.J.: The Jack of Hearts and the 9 of Hearts.

Doug: Well, Robert, if there were ever a good time to get on the scoreboard, this would be it. Dean would be 4/5 of the way toward a straight either way. Let's see what happens.

Doug: No surprise there...

DEAN

ROBERT

Doug: ...and going into the blind card question, Robert with trip Jacks, Dean can still make a King high straight. Next two cards come face down.

Doug: And now the 15-pointer.

Doug: Well, high hand is worth 25 points. Dean, you'll have the lead regardless of what happens with the cards. But only three cards will give you the extra 25 -- the Jack of Diamonds and the Jokers. Which card will do you want -- left or right?

Dean: Left card.

Doug: Left it is.

DEAN

ROBERT

Doug: Cards are in place. They both want a Jack or a Joker. D.J., please flip over Dean's last card.
