Video Poker

Give me the last names of the authors of "Human Sexual Response" and "Human Sexual Inadequacy".

(Chris buzzes in)

Doug: Chris.

Chris: Masters and Johnson.

Doug: That's right.

(ding; audience applause)

Doug: Champ with the early lead. Next question deals with music.

In the early '80s, John Cougar had a hit with a little ditty about two American kids growing up in the heartland. According to the song's title, what are the kids' first names?

(Mathias buzzes in)

Doug: Mathias.

Mathias: Jack and Dianne.

Doug: Right you are.

CHRIS
DEAN
MATHIAS

(ding; audience applause)

[NOTE FROM DOUG: Misspellings aren't penalized as long as it's "close enough". Diane is actually spelled with one less "n".]

Doug: Dean, let's see if you can make this a three-way tie with this.

This comedic magic duo often use card tricks that focus on the 3 of Clubs. One half of the duo briefly hosted the NBC game show "Identity"; the other usually doesn't speak. Name this duo.

(Mathias buzzes in)

Doug: Mathias again.

Mathias: Penn and Teller

Doug: Right again.

(ding; audience applause)

Doug: Mathias now our leader. Let's go to the movies for this next query.

Life imitated art after the release of the 2006 movie "The Break-up". Name the male and female stars of the movie who were dating in real-life at the time -- and broke up after the release of the movie.

(Mathias buzzes in)

Doug: Mathias again.

Mathias: Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston

Doug: Got it again.

(ding; audience applause)

Doug: Mathias now with 40, Chris 20, Dean 10. One more question and we're off to the video screen.

These two journalists, who investigated the initial Watergate break-in, documented the scandal in the book "All The President's Men". Give me the last names of the book's co-authors.

(Mathias buzzes in)

Doug: Mathias again.

Mathias: Bernstein and Woodward

Doug: Got it.

CHRIS
DEAN
MATHIAS

(ding; audience applause)

Doug: Mathias with a hot hand after five questions. A big 50 for him. Chris has 20 and Dean with 10. Remember, the first third of this round has just been completed. We've still got to deal with the video screen and the Poker Run before we declare a winner.

Now let's bring out the lovely D.J. Hamilton for the next phase of our round.

(audience cheers as D.J. enters from stage right)

D.J.: Thanks, Doug. Good evening, Chris, Dean and Mathias. Here's how this next part of the round works.

D.J.: On the screen, we have the Ace through 9 of each suit behind the numbers. You may each take up to two consecutive turns.

On the first turn, pick five numbers and if you like the cards hidden behind those card, take the points associated with the hand and pass control on to another player. But if you want to take that second turn, go ahead and make exchanges. Just remember your possession ends with that second turn.

D.J.: As always, you'll need something better than one pair of Jacks to earn any points at all -- or else we take five points away.

Doug: And don't forget, a natural royal flush in this or any other round pays an instant CY$1,000,000.

(audience cheers)

Doug: Dean, we'll begin with you. First, please tell Mr. & Mrs. Internet and all the ships at sea a little something about you.

Dean: I'm 33 and from Johnston, RI, and I'm currently looking for a position in tech support or help desk. And I am also a retired 'NetGame host.

Doug: Ah, yes, awesome job you did on FastTalkers, Net 10-to-1, Net U.S. MasterMind and more. Let's see if you have better luck with the cards here. Pick five of 'em, please.

Dean: Let's go with 2, 3, 8, 12 and 15.

Doug: Okie doke. Let's have a look at 'em.

(FF reveal sfx)

Doug: A pair of Aces and that's it. Only worth 5 points. Remember the most points gets the most letters in a head start before the Poker Run begins.

Now I should note you have three Clubs. If you successfully trade in the Hearts for the two remaining Clubs higher than a 9, you win 1000 points and CY$1,000,000. (a few "woos" from the crowd) But, of course, it's your call on how you want to play it.

Dean: I'm surprised you left out 'Net Lingo and 'Net Deal or No Deal.

Doug: Oh, man, those were great, too. How could I forget? I'm terribly sorry -- S-O-R-R-Y.

(audience laughs) (Trivia Trap sfx) (more laughs and applause)

Doug: For those wondering (points to gray hair), this is all real -- not due to the studio lights. (more laughter) Now, back to the game, going for the royal?

Dean: I'm not going for a flush, Doug, sorry. (audience groans) I don't think I'll find that many Clubs.

Doug: How quickly they turn. What'cha gonna do?

Dean: I will keep the Aces and go with 6, 17 and 19.

Doug: OK, basic move. He's assured of at least 5. Are more on the way?

(FF reveal sfx)

Doug: No, 'fraid not.

CHRIS
DEAN
MATHIAS

(ding)

Doug: Got a nickel out of that -- and a few laughs at my expense. Still have a ways to go yet. Chris, great to see you back here. You've been tremendous in waiting while we had the Net Definition tournament of champions going on in this studio. You've got to wait a little more while we shuffle.

(cards are shuffled on the video screen; after shuffling stops, the cards are covered immediately with the 24 numbers)

Doug: OK, before I turn you loose, tell us what you've been up to since we last saw you.

Chris: Well, let's see. I was able to find a new job as a lab technician for a food processing company. And my daughter just turned 5 months ago. She's getting so big. LOL. But it was a nice wait, and I'm very glad to be back here.

Doug: Ah, well happy five months to your daughter. Many there be many more. Five numbers, please.

Chris: Going with 2, 3, 10, 19, 20.

Doug: All righty, then. Let's have a look.

(FF reveal sfx)

Doug: Just Ace high. Minus five if you stopped here. Go ahead and take that second turn. Oh, before you do, I should note you have three Spades. If you successfully trade the Ace and 9 in for the other two Spades higher than a 9, 1000 points and CY$1,000,000.

Chris: I remember doing this last time and it worked out. I will trade the Ace and 9 -- (scattered cheers from the crowd) -- and go with 14 and 24.

(drum roll)

Doug: Ah, control room going for the dramatics.
