Episode 6 Game 1

Hart, Love or Valentine. Give me the last name shared by the character named Faye in the anime series "Cowboy Bebop" and the current Boston Red Sox manager named Bobby.

(Nikolai buzzes in)

Doug: Nikolai.

Nikolai: Valentine.

Doug: That's the same last name. (audience applause) I don't know much about anime. But I'm learning enough of the genre to know Faye Valentine is -- easy on the eyes. (audience laughs) Nikolai, that right answer has just earned you a free roll of the dice.

(Nikolai rolls)

Doug: And the dice total 7 -- times CY$100, you have CY$700 in the pot.

Nikolai, you have a choice to make. Gamble away everything in the pot by rolling again -- or banking the CY$700? Keep in mind from now until we start Round 2, any roll of a 7 results in a bust -- meaning all the cyber-money in the pot goes away and you bank nothing for the round.

Doug: Also going forward, the double decision board is in play. If you roll doubles, we could add CY$100 per point to the pot -- or you may take whatever's hiding in the corresponding screen. There could be thousands, a pleasant surprise, a not-so-pleasant surprise or a bust -- which is just as bad as rolling another 7.

So, Nikolai, care to roll again or bank the 700 and start a new round?

(audience shouts suggestions)

Nikolai: Let's give it a go. I'll roll 'em.

(Nikolai rolls)

Doug: And the dice total 8 this time. You've roughly doubled the pot to 1500. Roll again or bank?

(audience shouts suggestions)

Nikolai: I'm going to roll again.

(Nikolai rolls)

Doug: Hey now. Double 3 -- double decision. Nikolai, that roll could represent CY$600 more to the pot...

Doug: ...or whatever's hiding in the double 3 screen on the board.

If you go to the board and we find cyber-money, we add that much to the pot instead of CY$600. That screen could also hide a great or a not-so- great surprise -- including a bust. What's your pleasure?

(audience shouts suggestions)

Nikolai: It's still early, so I'm going to the board.

Doug: Going for it. Instead of a CY$600 addition to the pot, what happens?

(ding) (audience cheers)

Doug: We add CY$3000 to the pot! That's what.

Doug: Wow. CY$4500 in the pot. Let's shuffle the board.

(amounts are shuffled on the double decision board; after shuffling stops, the amounts are covered immediately with the doubles)

Doug: Nikolai, would you like to roll again and try to add to the 4500 -- or bank the moolah?

(audience shouts suggestions)

Nikolai: That's pretty good for one turn, so I'll bank.

(audience cheers)

Doug: Banking CY$4500.

(ding)

Doug: Remember, anytime you bank cyber-money, it is yours to keep regardless of how you finish in the game. Michael's eager to win this question so that he could get on a hot roll. Let's see who wins this next question.

S&H, S&P or A&P. Which of these began operations in 1842 as the first chain-store business?

(Michael buzzes in)

Doug: Michael.

Michael: A&P.

Doug: Right and right. (audience applause) All right, Michael, Nikolai got on a hot roll. Who's to say you can't? Free roll first.

(Michael rolls)

(scattered cheers)

Doug: Yeah -- five, six, pick up sticks. We seed a new pot with CY$1100.

Decision time comes now. Bank now and rake in 11 -- or roll again and try to avoid 7?

(audience shouts suggestions)

Michael: I will roll again.

(Michael rolls)

(more cheers)

Doug: Another big roll. Ten for CY$1000 more. Michael, quickly, you're up to CY$2100. What say ye?

(audience shouts suggestions)

Michael: I'll take the money.

(audience cheers)

Doug: Banking CY$2100.

(ding)

Doug: And with that, you have about half of Nikolai's total. Still plenty of time -- and anything can happen -- as we start Round 3 with this.

If you are stenophobic, are you afraid of narrow places?

(Michael buzzes in)

Doug: Michael.

Michael: Yes.

Doug: That's right. (audience applause) Another free roll of the dice for you, Michael.

(Michael rolls)

Doug: And double 4 -- but as you know, no double decision on the free roll. So we automatically seed the pot with CY$800. Roll again or bank?

(audience shouts suggestions)

Michael: I'll roll again.

(Michael rolls)

Doug: And that's a 5 for CY$500 more. CY$1300 in the pot. Bank the lucky 13 or try for more green?

(audience shouts suggestions)

Michael: I'll try for more green -- money, not the other green.

(a few laughs from the crowd)

(Michael rolls)

Doug: Oh, bugger. Seven busts you out. Score remains 4500 to 2100 in Nikolai's favor as we start Round 4 with another yes or no question.

Does Polaroid make sunglasses?

(Nikolai buzzes in)

Doug: Nikolai.

Nikolai: Yes.

Doug: They sure do. You're right. (audience applause) Give 'em a roll.

(Nikolai rolls)

Doug: And a 4 for CY$400 to start the round. Roll again or bank?

(audience shouts suggestions)

Nikolai: That's not enough. I've got to give them another roll.

(Nikolai rolls)

Doug: It appears the dice disagree. You didn't lose much ground. You're still at 4500. Michael still at 2100. Nearing the end of the game. Round 5 commences with this.

"20/20", "Rock Center with Brian Williams" or "60 Minutes". Which of these news programs does not have its own theme song?

(Nikolai buzzes in)

Doug: Nikolai.

Nikolai: 60 Minutes.

Doug: That's right. (audience applause) Rumor has it there were submitted theme songs for "60 Minutes" -- but after hearing the tapes, the executive producer was ticked off.

(audience groans)

(Nikolai rolls)

Doug: Nikolai couldn't wait to roll after that pun. Another 4, another CY$400 seeding of a pot. You got burned the last time you rolled after a 4. Feeling luckier? (audience shouts suggestions)

Nikolai: I am indeed feeling lucky, Doug. Let's toss those hot dice!

HOT DICE CONTINUES
