Audience Game

OK, it's audience game time on Hot Dice. Eddie, Will, we'll resume the main game competition in a few days (likely next week); we respectfully ask you sit this particular qualifying game out in an effort to spread the wealth.

That said, for the rest of the universe, the player closest to the right answer to this question, high or low, plays Exact Change for a virtual new car. Here the question...

Before this qualifying round, Scarlett Gray rolled a pair of money dice five times. Here's what makes the money dice different from a normal pair of dice: The numbers 1 through 6 have been replaced with sides worth, respectively, a penny, a nickel, a dime, a quarter, a half dollar and a dollar.

The sum of each roll was added to a running total, which, of course, started at $0.00. In dollars and cents, what was Scarlett's final total after five rolls?

(time passes)

All right. Let's go to the still store and she how she did.

First roll was a nickel and a quarter for 30 cents.

Then a penny and a nickel brought the total up to 36 cents.

Huh boy, another six-cent roll.

Double dimes. Did she get more than 30 cents with the last roll?

Nope. Another six-cent roll. Well, as you can see, the right answer is 68 cents. Something tells me the lowest number wins.

Matt Taylor	$3.20

Yup, it's Matt taylor with three-twenty. Thanks to all for playing. Matt, stand by for your game, please.

Charlie Sheen: You're watching VBS -- where you could do a lot of
-- you know -- WINNING!

======================================================================

(audience cheers)

Scarlett: Matt Taylor, come on up. It's your chance to win big on Hot Dice.

(Matt runs up to the dice table to meet Doug; they shake hands)

Doug: Thank you, Scarlett. Welcome back everyone to Hot Dice. Matt, you've got a great chance to win this.

(D.J. Hamilton drives in...)

Scarlett: For your driving enjoyment, IT'S A NEW CAR! (audience cheers) The Kia Soul comes with a 2.0L engine, 16" alloy wheels, five-star frontal crash rating and much, much more. A fun car worth CY$15,900.

Doug: But today, it's yours for the amazingly low prize of 75 cents -- here in a game we call Exact Change.

Doug: On the board, we've hidden 12 coins. Behind two of these numbers are half dollars. Behind three other numbers, we have quarters. Three others hide dimes. Three others have nickels.

You'll pick a number, we'll reveal the coin behind the number -- then add its value to the bank.

Now, we call this game Exact Change because you have to bank 75 cents exactly. Bank more than 75 and the game's automatically over.

*One* more thing. Somewhere on the board, we've hidden a lucky penny. Find that penny -- and we automatically augment the bank to 75 cents which gives you the car immediately.

Best of luck to you -- and pick a number.

Matt: 7

Doug: Lucky 7. Does it have the lucky penny right off the bat?

(box #7 turns around to reveal...)

(ding)

Doug: Nope -- but a great start. A quarter. Find the 50-cent piece or the lucky penny and the car is yours.

Matt: 17.

Doug: Seventeen -- eh?

Doug: I'll just *give* you the car if you can show me where 17 is on the board.

(audience laughs)

Matt: I meant 11.

Doug: All right -- 11 it is. Can he buy the car with just two coins?

(ding) (a few groans from the crowd)

Doug: No -- there's a dime. Now, Matt, it's possible to go over 75 cents on the next pick. So -- I'll give you a chance to bail out right now and take CY$50 for each cent you've banked.

In other words, you may take CY$1750 right now -- or go forward and pick another number.

(audience shouts suggestions)

Matt: I'll take 3.

Doug: Going to finish up the column with 3. By the way, you'll know you have the lucky penny because the coin has the word "car" on it. With that clarified, is that lucky penny behind 3?

(ding)

Doug: Nickel instead. Forty cents in the bank. Again, I give you a chance to bail out with CY$2000.

(audience shouts suggestions)

Matt: I'll go again with 5.

Doug: Going forward with 5. Does this hide the lucky penny?

(ding)

Doug: Quarter instead. You're up to 65 cents. Find one of the two remaining dimes or the lucky penny and you may buy the car for 75 cents. However, there's not much room for error.

Again I make the counter-offer of CY$50 for every cent or, in this case, CY$3250.

(audience shouts suggestions)

Matt: I'm going to go for it. (audience cheers) Give me 10.

Doug: Going for 10. If there's a dime or the lucky penny behind 10, you get the car. If there's a nickel, you're still in business -- but barely. Anything else -- and it's game over in more ways than one.

(dings; audience cheers)

Doug: Got it! You've banked 75 cents in exact change. The car's yours. Let's reveal the rest of the board.

Doug: Lucky penny at 9, half dollars at 4 and 12 and -- weird how we had three nickels and three quarters straight across.

Matt, enjoy the car. We'll enjoy another main game with Eddie and Will -- after this.
