Audience Game

All right, it's time for our first ever audience game on Hot Dice. In the interest of spreading the wealth, we respectfully ask our main game contestants to refrain from participation. (Shawn and Eddie, we'll start Game 2 after this audience game's over)

The player closest to the right answer to this question, high or low, gets to roll for a brand new car.

This Sunday, September 11th, the Dallas Cowboys are scheduled to play against the New York Jets in a nationally televised football game. When the game is over, what will be the margin of victory?

Kickoff is set for 8:20pm EDT. So, let's make the answers due five minutes before the scheduled kickoff -- or Sunday at 8:15pm EDT/7:15pm CDT.

Please keep in mind...

\ we're not asking for a final score prediction (although if you say "Cowboy 36, Jets 28", I have to take that as a prediction of 8).

\ you must respond in whole numbers (unlike Vegas oddsmakers who might say one team will win by 6.5).

\ if there are any ties for distance between a player's prediction and the actual margin of victory, the player who e-mailed me sooner takes the tie-break edge.

(time passes)

And the results are in: Jets 27, Cowboys 24. So that makes our right answer, obviously...

(ding)

...three points. Who's the closest?

Richie Kennedy 4
Matt Taylor 4

(Greed tie sfx)

Doug: These two are. As usual, we break the tie by finding out who locked 4 in first. And he is...

Richie Kennedy 4

...Richie. He plays for the car after this.

(audience cheers)

Scarlett Gray: Richie Kennedy, come on up. It's your chance to win big on Hot Dice.

(Richie runs up to the dice table to meet Doug; they shake hands)

Richie: Score one for the fearless football prognosticator.

Doug: Yes indeed. Welcome back to Hot Dice. Richie won our qualifying question about a football game's outcome. As a result, Richie you're the first to play an audience game. First to win -- one of these prize packages.

Scarlett: You could win -- an iPad2. (audience applause) From Apple, it's the thinner and lighter iPad2 64GB model. Comes with an A5 processor, FaceTime for video phone calls and a selection of free apps to get you started. We're also adding CY$3000 to spend on more apps to make this prize package worth CY$3700.

(prize music fades)

Scarlett: Or you could win, for your driving enjoyment, A BRAND NEW CAR!

(audience cheers)

Scarlett: It's the Chevrolet Camaro -- a classic muscle car built for the here and now. Comes with a 3.6L, V6 engine -- plus automatic transmission, four-wheel independent suspension, four-wheel disc brakes, six-disc CD changer, 1000-watt sound system and much, much more.

We're also adding a CY$10,000 gas card, furnished by CDM Enterprises, to make this prize package worth CY$47,300.

(audience cheers) (music fades)

Doug: Yes, you could win one of those prize packages *or* -- a paltry payoff of CY$25. (a few groans) That's right. We're playing a game we call Make A Pair.

Doug: Now here's how this works. By random assignment, behind the numbers on the board, we've hidden the word "CAR" twice, we've hidden the word "Prize" twice and we've hidden the number 25 twice.

"CAR", of course, represents the Camaro and the gas card. "Prize" represents the iPad2 and the CY$3000. "25" represents, of course, the miniscule CY$25.

In a moment, I'll hand you this dice cube -- and we'll reveal whatever is behind the number you roll.

There are two ways to make a pair -- rolling a particular number twice or uncovering two of the same word or amount. Keep rolling until you make a pair. Naturally, we hope you make a pair with the car.

When you're ready, take the cube -- and give it a roll.

(Richie rolls)

Doug: And he starts with a 3. May we see what's behind 3, please?

(ding) (audience cheers)

Doug: Well. Talk about the magic touch. Got the car right off the bat. Roll another 3, you get the car. Roll the other number hiding the word "car", you get the car.

Either way, it's a 1 in 3 shot at the car. Good luck.

(Richie rolls)

Doug: And it's a 4.

(dings; audience cheers)

Doug: YES! Richie! You've won the car! Congratulations. How ya like that?

Richie: Wow!

Doug: Wow indeed. Let's open the rest of the board just to fully disclose...

Doug: ...we had two prize cards and two "25" cards in addition. Richie, that nervous-looking accountant has the pink slip for the car. While you make arrangements there, we'll take a break and play Game 2 with Eddie and Shawn -- here on Hot Dice.
