After a hiatus, The Big Risk is back on track and we've added lots of new wrinkles. Please check out www.dougmorris.net/tbr for a full rules sheet.
In case you didn't see the pilot for this version of TBR, here's a quick summary...
\ Each round starts with a series of true/false questions that each player will get to play (in other words, no toss-up questions). Each round ends with a game of chance.
\ After three rounds, the two high scorers compete head-to-head. As with previous rounds, each contender gets to play true/false questions. Then, each contender must play one hand of blackjack versus that gracious dealer (NOT!!!) Dirty Harry. The minimum bet is determined by one draw of a card; that minimum bet could be as little as 10% of a player's score or 100% of the score (in other words, "the big risk").
\ The winner gets to roll the dice and build up tens of thousands of cyber-dollars -- toward the ultimate goal of CY$250,000.
...yeah, that's right, a quarter million in the bonus round. And because we've considerably raised the stakes in the main game, we might as well raise the stakes for the tournament of champions. The Big Risk Quarter Million Playoff is now The Big Risk Mega Playoff with a guaranteed payoff of CY$1,000,000 to the victor. More on that the closer we get to the tournament.
Now, when we last left you, Dean Scungio won TBR's then-named Quarter Million Playoff. Between the tournament and regular appearances, he racked up more than 450-grand in cyber-cash plus two cars and a trip on the Orient Express.
Even though we had an admittedly long layoff between the tournament and now (As Dean himself reminds us, "Actual reality before virtual reality.") and we've changed our format, we're still declaring this Game 15 of The Big Risk. So if you played the main game of our 12th, 13th or 14th episode, please sit on your hands and let someone else play. Can't remember when you played? Please go to www.dougmorris.net/tbr and click on archives.
Otherwise, we have no returning champion and seek three players. To get in on The Big Risk, answer the qualifying question. The three players closest to the right answer, high or low, get to play. So, here's the query...
On September 19, 2007, at 5:30pm, we recorded a "Cash Cab" rerun on The Discovery Channel. In the first of three games of this half-hour episode, how much money was given away? Here's a hint: the game didn't end in a strikeout -- but the offer of the "double or nothing" video bonus question was declined. That said, please respond to the nearest multiple of $25.
(time passes)
Some new folks in the audience trying to qualify for this, Net Poker and Net Definition. Thanks to all. Let's see how much money Ben Bailey doled out in that first game of the episode.
QUALIFYING ANSWER
$600
Six-hundred big ones. Who's the closest?
Todd Davis $525 John Hines $525Doug: Great minds must think alike. Well, the player who locked in sooner will be Player 1 -- and he is...
John Hines $525...John. Todd, fear not. You'll be Player 2. And Player 3 is...
Brian Moore $500...um...not going to be Brian. I know it's been an eternity since Game 12 -- but the records show that's when you last played. I'm sure we'll see you later. Next closest
Marc Enyedy $725Wow. Marc, the records show he wasn't part of Games 1-14, which represent the first season of the re-imagined version of TBR. Now ya know why we have the "wait three full eps" rule. Game 15 of TBR's next.
======================================================================Rich Jeffries: "The Simpsons Lose Their Life Savings In Atlantic City" (audience laughs) will not be seen at this time. In its place, let's watch someone win or lose a lot of -- D'OH! ======================================================================
Rich: From CDM Enterprises, a division of Trax Productions, it's time for a test of knowledge and a test of luck. Thousands can be won or lost when you take The Big Risk.
Rich: And now, here's the star of our show, Doug Morris!
(Doug walks from behind The Big Risk board) (audience cheers)
Doug: Thank you, Rich and helllooooooo, everybody. Great to have The All-New Big Risk back up and running. And TBR has even more new ways to play. In fact, we have a new bonus round that could be worth as much as CY$250,000.
Doug: That's right, a quarter mil. And if a player can do *really* well, he or she could take the top prize in The Big Risk's Mega Playoff for a guaranteed payoff of CY$1,000,000.
Doug: Little does he realize -- but it's all coming out of the fundage Dirty Harry managed to take from the players last season. (audience laughs) We'll see Dirty Harry and probably get dirty looks from him later. But right now, let's say hey to D.J. Hamilton.
(audience cheers) (D.J. walks out wearing a glittering green dress; gives Doug a big hug)
D.J.: Hey, Doug. Yay! TBR's back.
Doug: Yes indeed. Who's joined us on our first night back?
D.J.: Tonight on TBR, we welcome John Hines, Todd Davis and Marc Enyedy.
JOHN
TODD
MARC
Doug: Thanks, Deej, we'll see you later for our first game of chance. Right now, we want to get in the game. Now, we used to spot our players CY$50 to start Round 1. But we're upping the ante.
