Doug: Now, here's what will happen. We'll play a series of toss-up questions -- each worth CY$50. Chime in with the right answer and you win the half-C-note. Be careful -- because if you buzz in and give a wrong answer, we'll automatically give each of your opponents CY$50. After the questions, we'll give you a chance to double your stake with a game of chance. Right now, we start this round with the questions. All set? Here we go...

Eddie Steeples appears in commercials for what company? (Michael buzzes in) Michael.

Michael: OfficeMax

Doug: He plays the rubber band man. And you've won the first CY$50 in this new series.

Doug: Michael off to the early lead. Next question...

In 1935, what President of the U.S. proclaimed the Philippine Islands a free commonwealth? (Michael buzzes in) Michael.

Michael: Franklin Roosevelt

Doug: Right Roosevelt, right President, right answer.

Doug: Third question in the game coming up...

In 1906, a distress signal composed of three letters was adopted at the International Radio Telegraphic Convention in Berlin. What are these three letters? (Alan buzzes in) And Alan chimes in.

Alan: S O S

Doug: Your answer's A O K.

Doug: John, let's see if you can score on this next question...

In the movie Bruce Almighty, Jim Carrey's character is a reporter for a TV station in Buffalo, New York. What are the station's call letters? (John buzzes in) And there's John.

John: DRCTV

Doug: Sorry, not right. Jim's character worked for WKBW. So, the penalty here is Michael and Alan each win CY$50 by default.

MICHAEL

JOHN

ALAN

Doug: Our crack staff notes Jim Carrey wanted to have Irv Weinstein in the cast of the movie -- in the scene where Eyewitness News announces the retirement of their lead anchor. Around that time, Irv Weinstein was retiring from the real-life WKBW in Buffalo. Interesting stuff indeed. We play on for 50 more with the next question.

In a sketch by George Carlin, the "hippy-dippy weatherman" says his radar is detecting a squadron of Russian ICBM's. The acronym "ICBM" represents what three-word phrase? (Alan buzzes in) Alan.

Alan: Intercontinental Bullistic Missle

Doug: That's right. You're tied for the lead.

[NOTE FROM DOUG: Alan misspelled "ballistic" -- but spelling doesn't count here.]

Doug: Michael and Alan now with 200 each. John with 50. Next CY$50 question...

What is the most common first name for U.S. Presidents? (Michael buzzes in) And that's Michael.

Michael: James

Doug: Six out of our 43 Presidents, in some form or another, have had the first name of -- James.

MICHAEL

JOHN
CY$50
ALAN
CY$200

(audience applause)

Doug: Michael's back in the lead by himself. Next question is a math question about the Land Down Under...

Take the total population of Australia in 1999, multiply it by the number of occurences of the letter "Y" in Australia's capital city's name and then add the number of glaciers you'll find on the continent of Australia. What number do you get? (Alan buzzes in) Alan.

Alan: nice trick question Doug -- Zero.

Doug: And we didn't trick you, Alan. That's right.

(audience applause) (bells ring)

Doug: And time's up for the first half of the round. We should note whatever the population was in '99, multiply that number with zero Y's in "Canberra" and add zero glaciers to get a grand result of zero. Before we play the next half of the round, let's spend a few moments in conversation with the players -- starting with our designated champion, Michael.

Michael: My name is Michael Clifford. I am from Marlton, New Jersey. I am currently unemployed. I like watching game shows & playing netgames.

Doug: Well, we're glad you're playing The All-New Big Risk. You'll get to make an important decision in the next round of the game. John, a word or two about you, please.

John: I am a student/video production owner from the Laurel Highlands of PA. I enjoy music, GSN, video games, computers and even traveling.

Doug: Ah, we'll have to hear about some of your destinations later. And Alan rounds out our trio. Tell us a little about yourself, please.

Alan: i'm Alan Timper, a 31 year old pharmacist from Lima, Ohio.... I'm currently the host of the idle 'Net Fast and First' which will make its return in March

Doug: Great game on VBS. And my fianc?e's from that part of the world -- Delphos, Ohio, in fact. In any event, time for the risk half of the round. It's a little game we call Dice Risk and D.J. will explain how we play.

D.J.: Thanks, Doug. Players, here's how we play Dice Risk...

D.J.: ... behind the numbered spaces are cards ranked between 4 and 10 inclusive -- but excluding a 7. Michael, since you're the designated champion, go ahead and pick a number off the board.

Michael: 6

D.J.: And behind number 6 is...

(ding)

D.J.: ...an 8. That means our dealer's point is 8. Now, here to roll the dice is our dealer. If you didn't see him on Shopper's Casino in the '80s, be glad. But we hope you've seen him on Net Poker Live! Here he is -- Dirty Harry.

(in a standard blackjack dealer's uniform, Dirty Harry walks out to a chorus of boos)

D.J.: Now, here's the situation. Michael established the point as 8. It's up to all three of you to place a wager on "PASS" or "DON'T PASS". After you bet, Harry will roll a pair of dice up to seven times.

If you bet on "PASS", you're predicting Harry will make his point before rolling a 7. If you bet on "DON'T PASS", you're predicting Harry will fail to roll an 8 and roll a 7 before matching the point.

Winning bets pay off at 1-to-1. Losing predictions lose the amount of the wager and all bets result in a push if Harry doesn't roll an 8 or 7 after seven rolls of the dice.

Doug: And the minimum bet in this round is CY$50. You may bet all of your winnings -- but you must bet in CY$50 increments. Good luck and place your bets.
