5-Card Poker

Rich: The winner of tonight's game could win a trip for every season around the world!

This fabulous trip starts in the winter in picturesque Zurich, Switzerland. Then in the spring, it's off to the city of romance -- Paris France. The summer brings sunshine in the day and fiestas at night in Acapulco, Mexico. Then in the fall, a fabulous vacation to beautiful Vancouver, British Columbia. This trip of a lifetime includes a six-night stay at a luxury hotel in each city -- compliments of Club Universe.

And now, Josh and Todd try to stay in the game in 5-Card Poker. Back to Doug Morris and this sneak preview of The New Net Poker.

(audience cheers)

Doug: Thanks, Rich. We're back and ready to go for our elimination round. Now the player eliminated in this round will collect CY$5000 plus CY$10 per point. When we resume normal play, the consolation prize would just be CY$10 per point.

Doug: We've reset Josh's and Todd's scores to zero. And now we debut a new theme of questioning in this New Net Poker sneak peak.

TIME MACHINE
1978

Doug: Time Machine -- and our base year is 1978. In this round, I'll name an event and it's up to you to chime in and determine if that event happened before, during or after 1978.

Every time you chime in with the right answer, you earn 10 points and the right to choose one of two up cards for your hand. If you buzz in and miss, the points and control of the cards automatically go to your opponent.

After you each have four cards, we'll play one more event for 15 points. High hand wins 25 points -- and then we go on to another Poker Run to determine our winner.

Josh cut the cards -- and let's see the first two cards of this round.

(a few groans from the crowd)

D.J.: Oh, man. This happened often during the tourney. King of Hearts and the 10 of Hearts.

OK, obviously no million to discuss in this round. But 10 points at stake in this question.

Hank Aaron breaks Babe Ruth's home run record.

(Josh buzzes in)

Doug: Josh.

Josh: That happened in 1974, a good bit before 1978.

Doug: He's right and all over it.

(ding; audience applause)

Doug: Which heart are ya takin', Josh?

Josh: Take the King.

Doug: King's yours...

Doug: ...Todd gets the 10 of Hearts. Two more cards, please.

D.J.: The Ace of Hearts and the Queen of Clubs.

Doug: Bullet and a lady with this next 10-point event.

Garfield debuts in the funny papers.

(Josh buzzes in)

Doug: Josh again.

Josh: That happened in 1978.

Doug: I'll take that as a "during" -- and you're right. (ding; audience applause) You lead 20-0, Josh -- and you get the pick again.

Josh: I'll take the Ace.

Doug: Figured as much.

JOSH

TODD

Doug: Both players 2/5 of the way toward a straight. Next cards, please.

D.J.: The 10 of Clubs and the Ace of Hearts.

Doug: Well now, both players will be 3/5 of the way toward a straight -- or both will build on a pair. Todd would like some points -- with this next event...

Sony's Walkman is introduced.

(Josh buzzes in)

Doug: Josh again.

Josh: I think that happened after 1978.

Doug: '79, as matter of fact. Three in a row for you. (ding; audience applause) Todd, I see you trying to buzz in. Hang in there. Josh, which card?

Josh: Take another Ace.

Doug: And in the process...

JOSH

TODD

Doug: ...Todd gets another 10. Two more cards, Deej.

(a few woos from the crowd)

D.J.: The Queen of Hearts and the Jack of Clubs.

Doug: Well -- round could take quite a turn here on this next event.

The New York discothèque Studio 54 opens for the first time.

(Josh buzzes in)

Doug: Josh.

Josh: Studio 54 opened before 1978

Doug: That's right.

JOSH

(ding; audience applause)

Doug: Studio 54 opened in '77. Josh, which card would you like before the blind card question?

Josh: Don't want to give him two pair so I'll take the lady.

Doug: All right, as we get ready for the blind card question...

JOSH

TODD

Doug: ...each player still has one pair. Josh has a commanding 40-0 lead. Final two cards for the round.

Doug: Now in the old days, Todd would need to buzz in and answer correctly in an effort to just clinch a tie. But from now on, in an elimination round, we play to a goal of 100 points. This blind card question will be the last from the Time Machine theme. After we award 25 points for high hand, we'll shift gears and have another Poker Run.

So, basically, the players are jockeying for position. Josh and Todd, I should also note with this next question, there are, in essence, two events in this question. Both events happened within the confines of one calendar year.

Good luck, play carefully -- and here we go for 15 points...

The NBC television network debuts "Supertrain" -- which it cancels weeks later.

(Josh buzzes in)

Doug: Josh.

Josh: I'll say it was after 78.

Doug: That's right.

JOSH
TODD

(ding; audience applause)

Doug: "Stuportrain", uh I mean "Supertrain" (light laughter from the crowd) debuted in February of '79. All right, Josh, which card?

Josh: The left card.

Doug: Going with the left.

JOSH

TODD

Doug: ...Todd would like to see a 10, Queen or Jack right now -- or else Josh will be at the door step in the Poker Run. Deej, let's see Todd's last card.

JOSH

TODD

Doug: Well now. A third 10. Josh, only way you can win 25 points more is if your last card's an Ace. Let's have a look.

JOSH

TODD

Doug: Jack of Spades won't work. Todd's finally on the scoreboard.

(ding; audience applause)

Doug: All right, Josh leads 55-25. But the goal is 100 points. Let's get there through the courtesy of another Poker Run.
