5-Card Poker

Doug: We're back. Any contestant on Net Poker who wins four straight main games wins a brand new car -- and also plays for CY$1,000,000 *plus* the outlaw's jackpot's contents in Deuces Wild Poker.

Doug: And don't forget, a million can be won in any round -- if you make a natural royal flush. Deo, Melanie, we've reset your scores to zero as we start our second round of the game. It's 5-Card Poker and our theme is...

THREE OF A KIND

Doug: ...Three of a Kind. I'll list three items united by a common thread. All you have to do is identify what they have in common.

Each time you chime in with the right answer, you earn 10 points and a choice of one of two cards for your poker hand. The card you decline automatically goes to your opponent.

After you each have four cards, we'll play a 15-point blind card trio. Player who makes the better hand earns 25 points. Then we race to 100 points in another Poker Run.

Deo and Melanie finished in a tie for second place in the last Poker Run. Since Deo came into that Poker Run with more points, we let him cut the cards for this round. And here come the first two cards from the top of the deck.

(a few groans from the crowd)

D.J.: The King of Diamonds and the Jack of Diamonds.

Doug: Obviously, million's out of the discussion this time. Tell me what the following things have in common.

"Police Squad!", "Jeopardy!", "Shindig!"

(Deo buzzes in)

Doug: Deo.

Deo: They use an exclamation mark in their title.

Doug: We'll take that. Shows with a title that ends in an exclamation point.

(ding; audience applause)

Doug: First 10 points of the round go to you, Deo, as well as the choice of card.

Deo: King.

Doug: The King goes to you.

Doug: Melanie, you get the Jack out of that exchange and two more cards are on the way.

D.J.: The Jack of Hearts and the 9 of Hearts.

Doug: OK, two Hearts up for grabs with this next trio.

Anna Kournikova, Bob Harper, Dolvett Quince

(Deo buzzes in)

Doug: Deo again.

Deo: They are the trainers on The Biggest Loser!

Doug: You're right again.

(ding; audience applause)

Doug : Anna Kournikova -- easy on the eyes, tough on the contestants. (a few laughs from the crowd) Deo, which card?

Deo: Jack.

Doug: Jack goes to you.

DEO

MELANIE

Doug: Melanie gets the 9. Let's see two more cards please.

D.J.: The King of Hearts and the Ace of Clubs.

Doug: Well, two high cards. Melanie, golden opportunity here. Next trio.

Butcher, baker, candlestick maker

(Melanie buzzes in)

Doug: Melanie.

Melanie: Rub-a-dub-dub, they're the three men in the tub.

Doug: From the famous nursery rhyme. You're on the board. (ding; audience applause) Melanie, you've got 10, Deo has 20 and you have the pick.

Melanie: Let's put both of us on a straight draw. I'll take the king.

Doug: OK, I hear a few groans out there. But I understand what you're saying.

DEO

MELANIE

Doug: Even though Deo now has the potential Ace high straight and you the King high straight possibility, it would've been impossible for you to make a straight if you took the Ace and gave Deo at least two Kings.

Let's see how the strategy works with two more cards.

D.J.: The Queen of Diamonds and the Ace of Diamonds.

Doug: All right. Important trio on the way. Your next clues.

Swee'Pea, Olive Oyl, Wimpy

(Melanie buzzes in)

Doug: Melanie.

Melanie: Popeye's friends.

(Doug looks to judge...) (...who activates the bell)

Doug: OK, they gave it to you. (audience applause) Generically, we were looking for characters in the comic strip, video game or cartoon series "Popeye". Swee'Pea, I think, is an adopted son. Ultimately, he's closer to a friend than an enemy.

Melanie, you've tied the round at 20. Which card?

Melanie: I know it's risky... but I'll give up the other ace and take the queen.

Doug: Very well.

DEO

MELANIE

Doug: We've yet to see a 10 in this round. Maybe it's waiting for you among the next two cards which come face down.

Doug: We're going to up the stakes now. This next trio is worth 15 points. High hand gets you 25.

For this next trio, we're going to need a specific answer.

Gold, frankincense, myrrh

(Deo buzzes in)

Doug: Deo.

Deo: What the three wise men gives to Jesus.

Doug: That's -- correct.

(dings; audience applause)

Doug: All right, Deo, important choice of cards. The left or right?

Deo: Right.

Doug: Very well.

DEO

MELANIE

Doug: Cards are in place. Let's see who takes the lead ahead of the Poker Run. Melanie, you gave him two Aces; you have to hope Deo gave you a 10 blindly. Let's see Melanie's last card first, please.

DEO

MELANIE

(a few groans)

Doug: Left you a 9 instead. Deo, you've got the 25 extra points.

(ding; audience applause)

Doug: Just to wrap up this phase of the round, what was Deo's last card, Deej?

DEO

MELANIE

Doug: Wow -- third Ace. All right -- the round is not over yet. Let's race to 100 points in another Poker Run.
