The Dodger who broke
baseball's color barrier

(Dean buzzes in)

Doug: Dean.

Dean: Jackie Robinson.

Doug: Right you are.

(ding; audience applause)

Doug: Number 42 in the program, number 1 in the hearts of many.

Dean with the early lead. Here's the next haiku.

Delivers top ten
on the CBS "Late Show"

(Dean buzzes in)

Doug: Dean again.

Dean: David Letterman.

Doug: Right again.

DEAN
MICHAEL
CHARLIE

(ding; audience applause)

Doug: My niece, Nicole, got to check out a "Late Show" recently. She loved it. Moving on to another haiku.

Lovely Latina,
she's "Catch 21's" dealer

(Dean buzzes in)

Doug: Dean again.

Dean: Mikki Padilla.

Doug: Three in a row.

(ding; audience applause)

Doug: Champ showin' why he's the champ. Michael, Charlie, let's see if you can score 10 on this next haiku.

Was bikini clad
as Honey in "Dr. No"

(Michael buzzes in)

Doug: And it's Michael.

Michael: (in a Japanese accent) Ursula Andress.

(audience laughs)

Doug: Cute.

DEAN
MICHAEL
CHARLIE

(ding; audience applause)

Doug: By the way, Ursula Andress is right and I was referring to the fact she looked cute in the bikini. (audience laughs) All right, one more haiku.

Was Dr. McCoy
on the TV show "Star Trek"

(Michael buzzes in)

Doug: Michael again.

Michael: (in a Japanese accent) DeForest Kelley.

(audience laughs)

Doug: Right again.

(ding; audience applause)

Doug: I had a difficult time explaining to one of my now-ex-co-workers that on "Star Trek", McCoy was a doctor, not the captain.

(audience laughs)

Doug: All right. One round's in the books. Dean's in the lead with 40. Michael with 30. We've yet to hear from Charlie at 10. But to borrow a line from another show with a Japanese theme, there's still plenty of gaming opportunity left. Lovely D.J. in lovely kimono explains to you how.

D.J.: All right. Dean, Michael, Charlie, you'll each take up to two consecutive turns at the video screen. Behind these numbers are playing cards -- Ace through 9 of each suit.

On your first turn, choose any five numbers and we'll reveal the cards hidden behind them. If you're happy with that hand, take the points and pass control to another player. If you want to take that second turn, discard as many cards as you like and then pick as many new numbers. Remember, on that second turn, you're stuck with the points associated with the hand.

D.J.: And here's the breakdown of the value for each hand. Don't get stuck with a pair of Jacks or something worse -- or else we dock you five points.

Doug: All right, thanks, Deej. Remember, a royal flush in this round gets you 1000 points *plus* -- CY$1,000,000.

(audience cheers)

Doug: Charlie, you're low man on the totem pole. Let's see if you have better luck with the cards than the questions. Pick five numbers, please.

(time passes)

Doug: Come on -- any five.

(more time passes) (buzz buzz)

Doug: OK, no numbers in time. That means... (Trivia Trap sfx) ...yes, we hear the mating call of the emu. (light laughter from the crowd) It also means we gotta dock you five points.

DEAN
MICHAEL
CHARLIE

(buzz)

Doug: We move to Michael after we shuffle the cards.

(cards are shuffled on the video screen; after shuffling stops, the cards are covered immediately with the 24 numbers)

Doug: All right. We're set. Michael, before you pick numbers, tell us about your self.

Michael: (in a Japanese voice) Thank you very much, Doug.

(audience laughs)

Michael: Oh, the haiku thing is over with. I was on a roll.

Anyway, my name is Michael Clifford. I am from Marlton, New Jersey. am currently unemployed. I like watching game shows and playing netgames. Also, there is a new celebrity chick that I like.

Doug: Oh, do tell?

Michael: Her name is Heather Morris. She plays the blonde cheerleader Brittany on "Glee". BTW, I still like Jill Manas. It's just that I don't have GSN so I can watch the old Deal Or No Deal episodes.

(audience awws)

Doug: Hey, I'm sure "Glee" will occupy your time. I was *amazed* it's set in Lima, Ohio, where my in-laws live. We could talk about Heather and Jill all day -- but we need to get back to the game. Five numbers, please.

Michael: I will go with 18, 12 -- See? I haven't forgotten about Jill! (light laughter from the crowd) 20, 24 and 21.

Doug: All right, let's have a look and see if these cards will make you shout with -- ya know -- glee. (light laughter from the crowd)

(FF reveal sfx) (scattered cheers)

Doug: Hey now! Three Kings. Trips earn 15 points. Now you could stop now and let Dean have a go at it -- or take a second turn and try to improve upon this combination. What say ye?

Michael: I'm going to find that fourth King. (scattered cheers) I'll exchange the Jack and the 9 with 16 and 22.

Doug: Very well. We'll forget about that little ditty about Jack and 9 and show you what's behind 16 and 22.

(FF reveal sfx) (scattered groans)

Doug: A 10 and a 9, respectively. No gain on the play.

DEAN
MICHAEL
CHARLIE

(ding)

Doug: Good part is you have the lead for now. Dean, time now for you to possibly improve your score. Let's shuffle first.

(cards are shuffled on the video screen; after shuffling stops, the cards are covered immediately with the 24 numbers)
