In computing, a byte is made up of how many bits?

(Chris buzzes in)

Doug: Chris.

Chris: VIII

Doug: Eight is enough for you to win 10 points.

(ding; audience applause)

Doug: In case you're wondering at home, we thought about keeping score in Roman numerals -- but we have a new scorekeeper and didn't want to put him under pressure. (light laughter from the crowd) Next question.

If our new announcer, Scarlett Gray, had two quarters, five nickels and two pennies in her piggy bank, how many cents does the bank hold?

(Chris buzzes in)

Doug: Chris again.

Chris: LXXVII

Doug: A whopping 77 cents -- that's right.

(ding; audience applause)

Doug: Chris off to the early lead. Matt, Eddie, fear not, the night is young.

Give me the total number of stars and stripes on the U.S. flag.

(Matt buzzes in)

Doug: Matt.

Matt: XLVIII

(buzz)

Doug: 'Fraid it's more than 48. Fifty stars and thirteen stripes give you LXIII or 63. Gotta knock you down to zero.

Doug: Next question's a bit timely with the Super Bowl just around the corner.

If an NFL team scored two field goals in the first quarter of a game and scored a touchdown but missed an extra point in the second quarter, how many points would the team have by halftime?

(Chris buzzes in)

Doug: Chris.

Chris: XII

Doug: Twelve points is right.

(ding; audience applause)

Doug: Chris with a big 40, Eddie with 10, Matt with nothing. Last question before we go to the video screen.

When a game of 8-Ball starts, how many balls are on the table?

(Matt buzzes in)

Doug: Matt.

Matt: XVI

Doug: That's right.

MATT
CHRIS
EDDIE

(ding; audience applause)

Doug: Seven solids, seven stripes, the 8-ball and, of course, you can't break 'em if you don't have that all important cue ball. All right, Chris has 40, the others are tied at 10. Time to go to Deej for the first time this year for more points.

D.J.: Thanks, Doug. Matt, Chris, Eddie, here's where more points await. You'll each take up to two consecutive turns at the video screen. On the first turn, pick five numbers and we'll reveal the cards behind them. As always, we have the Ace through 9 of every suit on the board.

If you're happy with the combination you made, take the points associated with that hand and pass control to another player. But if you think you can do better, trade in some or all of your cards for as many new ones. Just know your possession ends after that second turn.

Doug: And a pair of Queens, Kings or Aces will get you five points, two pair for 10, trips for 15, a straight for 20, flush for 25, full boat for 40, straight flush for 250 and a royal flush for 1000 points *as well as* -- CY$1,000,000.

(audience cheers)

Doug: And don't forget, you're trying to improve upon your position ahead of the Poker Run that will decide the winner of this round. Now, we have a tie between Matt and Eddie. Since it involves the champ, Matt goes first. First, Matt, we've been away for awhile, remind the nice folks about yourself.

Matt: Well I'm a 25 year old reservations manager for a major hotel chain.

Doug: Well, we're glad you made room for us on Net Poker. Five numbers, please.

Matt: 3 6 7 13 17

Doug: All right, let's have a look.

(FF reveal sfx)

Doug: Well, a pair of 10s. If you stopped here, we'd dock you 5 points -- so go ahead and make exchanges, please.

Matt: Keep the king and go 8 12 14 16

Doug: Interesting strategy. Do those even numbers help your scores?

(FF reveal sfx)

Doug: Ah, the two Aces comes through for ya.

(ding)

Doug: Bumps you up to 15. Won't give you first place -- but the round's far from over. Let's shuffle the cards for Eddie now.

(cards are shuffled on the video screen; after shuffling stops, the cards are covered immediately with the 24 numbers)

Doug: Now, Eddie, before we let you take command here, *everyone* behind the scenes -- cameramen, floor director, and so forth -- is wearing Saints jerseys. We know you're a sportswriter and your focus is mostly college sports -- but what's your take on the Saints?

Eddie: They're going to be the sentimental favorites, for sure. But I'm afraid that if the Colts don't give the ball away like the Vikings did -- and Manning usually doesn't -- they're going to take it.

(crew and some audience members groan)

Eddie: But hey, I cover colleges, so what do I know?

Doug: I hear ya. I don't have a dog in this fight. My Bengals were out of the playoffs quickly -- and if there's anything Bengal fans know a thing or two about it's suffering for long periods of time. So I'll root for the underdog Saints.

OK, back to *this* game. Five numbers, please.

Eddie: Well, let's see -- I'll take III, VII -- oh sorry, that was last round.

(audience laughs)

Eddie: Seriously, let's see if some common football numbers work for me. 3, 7, 10, 14, 21.

Doug: 3, 7, 10, 14, 21, hut, hut, hut!

(more laughs)
