Video Poker

Chad: twelve, midnight

(Robert buzzes in)

Doug: Robert.

Robert: Noon and noon.

Doug: That's correct.

MATT
BRIAN
ROBERT

(ding; audience applause)

Doug: Robert takes the early lead. Chad's looking at two more passwords -- and has a clue for each one comin'.

Chad: sonar, Doppler

(Robert buzzes in)

Doug: Robert again.

Robert: Radar and radar.

Doug: Right again.

(ding; audience applause)

Doug: I don't know about you but I'm seeing an eerie pattern with these back and forth passwords. (light laughter from the crowd) We move on with two more clues to two more passwords.

Chad: even, floor

(Brian buzzes in)

Doug: Brian.

Brian: Level and level.

Doug: Correct and correct.

MATT
BRIAN
ROBERT

(ding; audience applause)

Doug: Fourth pair of passwords are on the way. Clues again come from Chad.

Chad: pupil, ocular

(Matt buzzes in)

Doug: Matt.

Matt: eye eye

Doug: Aye aye, captain.

MATT
BRIAN
ROBERT

(ding; audience applause)

Doug: All right, one last pair of passwords and then we go to the video screen for more points. Here come the clues from Chad.

Chad: Earnhardt, automobile

(Matt buzzes in)

Doug: Matt.

Matt: Race car, race car?

Doug: This was an all palindrome round, folks. Matt's right.

(ding; audience applause)

[NOTE FROM DOUG: "Racecar" can be expressed as one word. But if you're familiar with the history of "Password", especially "Password Plus" and "Super Password", you know producers allowed for passwords to be two words for the sake of the password puzzle.

Since "race car" sounds the same as "racecar", Matt was credited with a right answer.]

Doug: OK, Matt and Robert are tied with 30, Brian's not far behind at 20. Before we go any further, please watch for Chad on the Net Match Game - Hollywood Squares Hour. He also just started blogging about game shows for About.com. And basically -- just keep your eye on this fella. I see great things in his future.

D.J.: Oh, and I'm free for dinner, Chad.

(audience laughs)

Doug: D.J. Hamilton, always the desperate housewife. A nice hand for Chad Mosher.

(audience cheers) (hand shakes all around between Doug, Chad and D.J.) (Chad waves to the crowd; exits stage right)

Doug: Now time for the next part of our round -- and D.J.

D.J.: OK, players, as you know, the cards Ace through 9 of each suit are hidden behind these numbers. When it's your turn, you'll pick five numbers and make a poker hand out of the combination. If you're happy with that hand, take the points and pass control; if you'd rather make exchanges, please tell me which cards you want to reject and the select as many new numbers.

If you take that second consecutive turn, you may take no more and you'll be stuck with whatever points you get out of the hand.

D.J.: And here's the paytable. You'll need at least one pair better than a Jack to win any points at all -- otherwise we have to take 5 points away.

Doug: And remember, the player who makes a natural royal flush naturally in this or any other round of the main game automatically wins CY$1,000,000.

(audience cheers)

Doug: So, Brian, you're in last place right now. Pick five numbers and get us started.

(time passes) (buzz buzz)

Doug: No selections in time. 'Fraid that means since you have no pair, we'll have to take 5 away. (buzz) And we move on to Matt since he's currently the champ and in a tie with another player. Shuffle the cards, please.

(cards are shuffled on the video screen; after shuffling stops, the cards are covered immediately with the 24 numbers)

Doug: And the cards are set. Matt, for those who missed the last show, tell the nice folks about yourself.

Matt: Well I'm currently working as a reservations manager in Maine for a major hotel company. I'm also debating as going as Doug Morris for Halloween.

(light laughter from the crowd)

Doug: Bless you for not wanting to dress as Dirty Harry from that other show. (audience laughs) Five numbers, please.

Matt: 3, 7, 9, 12, 17

Doug: OK, let's have a look.

(FF reveal sfx)

Doug: Pair of cowboys. That's 5 points if you want to stop here. If you'd like, you can ditch some cards and draw as many new ones. What's your pleasure?

Matt: Let's keep the kings and go with 13, 20 and 22.

Doug: OK, you're assured of five more points -- but will 13, 20 and 22 give you any more?

(FF reveal sfx)

Doug: Another couple of 9s. You have two pair for 10 points.

MATT
BRIAN
ROBERT

(ding)

Doug: Now remember, the player with the most points has the advantage going into the Poker Run. Robert, your turn after we shuffle.

(cards are shuffled on the video screen; after shuffling stops, the cards are covered immediately with the 24 numbers)

Doug: And the cards are in place. Before we start, tell Mr. and Mrs. Internet and all the ships at sea the Robert McBride story.

Robert: I just started my fourth season at Game Shoe Kingdom and also trying to do some work for my MMA Examiner job.

Doug: You -- forgot the part about winning the Net Poker tournament of champions for CY$1,000,000. (light laughter from the crowd) In any event, five numbers please.

Robert: #1, #2, #6, #11 and #24

Doug: Okie doke. Let's have a look.

(FF reveal sfx)

Doug: Pair of Aces and that's all for 5 points. If you stopped here, you'd have only one free letter for the Poker Run whereas Matt would have two. You could take that second turn and improve upon that standing.

Robert: Keep the Aces and replace the other three with #21, #22 and #23.

Doug: Okie doke. Queen, Jack and 9 go in the dumpster. What's replacing them?
