Joker Poker

(smooth jazz theme plays)

Rich: The championship's on the line. Brian and Matthias play Joker Poker where one of them could win CY$25,000 -- plus a side pot worth CY$10,000. Back to Doug Morris and The New Net Poker.

(audience cheers)

Doug: Thanks, Rich. And then we had two. Brian won the first round, Matthias the second. Winner of this round wins the game and a chance to win CY$75,000 in Deuces Wild Poker. (audience cheers) Let's get to our theme in this round.

IN OTHER WORDS

Doug: Ah, one of my favorites -- In Other Words. I'll express a phrase or title in other words, you have to give me the actual phrase or title.

You'll know we're looking for a title when it's in quotes -- and we'll need the exact title.

Each question is worth 10 points -- 'til we get to the 15-point blind card question. High hand's worth 25. Then we go to the Poker Run until someone reaches the goal of 100 points.

Brian cut the cards for this round -- and here come the first two cards from the top of the deck.

D.J.: The 9 of Spades and the 10 of Spades.

Doug: And the first question from In Other Words is indeed a title. Here it comes...

"Cease, Scan Plus Hear"

(Brian buzzes in)

Doug: Brian.

Brian: Stop Look & Listen

Doug: Correct.

BRIAN
MATTHIAS

(ding; audience applause)

Doug: It was the title of a song by Donna Summer -- and the title of an early CBS game show. Brian, as if I have to ask.

Brian: The 10 of spades.

BRIAN

MATTHIAS

Doug: Very well. Matthias gets the 9 -- and we have two more cards.

D.J.: The King of Clubs and the Jack of Clubs.

Doug: All righty. Two Clubs up for grabs. Take a look at this...

All involved is Leonard Maltin

(Brian buzzes in)

Doug: Brian again.

Brian: Everyone's a Critic

Doug: That's a correct answer. (ding; audience applause) We also would've taken "everybody's a critic" as a right answer. Even if one of you split that first word into two -- "everyone is" or "everybody is" -- that would've been fine. Brian, you lead 20-0. Which card?

Brian: I'll take the cowboy

Doug: King for Brian.

BRIAN

MATTHIAS

Doug: Matthias gets the knave. Two more cards are on the way.

D.J.: The King of Diamonds and the 10 of Diamonds.

Doug: So far, they've been coming in pairs on suits. No Jokers yet this round. Next question...

"Earvin Johnson, Jr.: That Assemblage"

(Brian buzzes in)

Doug: Brian again.

Brian: "Magic: The Gathering"

Doug: Right again.

BRIAN
MATTHIAS

(ding; audience applause)

Doug: Matthias, I see you trying to buzz in. Brian so far has the hotter hand. And he has the pick again.

Brian: One King is good -- but another would be even better. The cowboy please.

Doug: Second cowboy it shall be.

BRIAN

MATTHIAS

Doug: Remember, the round's not over 'til someone reaches 100 points. Brian with two Kings, Matthias on a straight draw. Two more cards are comin'.

D.J.: The Jack of Spades and the Queen of Hearts.

Doug: OK, getting interesting as we move on to this next clue.

Paying up with dollars with an effort at creating dollars

(Matthias buzzes in)

Doug: Matthias.

Matthias: Buying to sell.

(buzz)

Doug: Sorry -- not right. We were looking for "spend money to make money". Under the old rules, we'd allow Brian a chance to steal the points and control of the cards. But with these new rules, the points and control automatically go to the opposition.

BRIAN
MATTHIAS

(ding)

Doug: So Brian, which card would you like?

Brian: I will take the Queen.

Doug: Lady goes to Brian.

BRIAN

MATTHIAS

Doug: And with that done. Brian has two Kings, Matthias with two Jacks. With a little luck, Matthias can tie the score with the help of these next cards.

Doug: We're at the 15-point blind card clue. High hand bonus is 25 points. Then we go to the Poker Run to find a winner. Here's the blind card clue.

007 matter

(Brian buzzes in)

Doug: Brian.

Brian: Bond Issue

Doug: That's right. (ding; audience applause) 007 is James Bond, matter's another word for issue. Brian, which card?

Brian: I'll take the right.

Doug: OK, Matthias will end up with the left card by default.

BRIAN

MATTHIAS

Doug: And let's see Matthias' last card first. He's building on two Jacks. Deej, what's the last card?

BRIAN

MATTHIAS

Doug: Looky there. A Joker. That's three of a kind. Brian, only way you'll get another 25 is if the right was a King or Joker. Let's see it.

BRIAN

MATTHIAS

Doug: Nope. A Queen. Matthias gets on the board.

BRIAN
MATTHIAS

(ding; audience applause)

Doug: It's 55-25 in Brian's favor. But let's race to 100 in another Poker.

(motorcycle sfx)

Doug: This Poker Run works like the earlier run -- 15 points a question. But we increase the stakes by 5 points for each face card that comes down the chute. These are the next cards from the top of the deck.

D.J.: The 9 of Diamonds and the Ace of Spades.

Doug: So we stay at 15 per query. Brian's three away from the championship. Matthias, two right answers will tie the game. Let's start the Poker Run -- now.

Before becoming the 41st President of the United States, George H.W. Bush served as...
\ Vice President of the United States
\ director of the CIA
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(Brian buzzes in)

Doug: Brian.

Brian: All of the above

(ding)

Doug: That's right. Next question's about the former prez's son -- himself a former prez.

Before becoming the 43rd President of the United States, George W. Bush served as...
\ governor of Texas
\ U.S. senator from Texas
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(Matthias buzzes in)

Doug: Matthias.

Matthias: governor of Texas

(ding)

Doug: Right.
