5-Card Poker

(smooth jazz theme plays)

Rich: All of tonight's players receive a copy of Net Poker: The Home Game. Make winning hands, battle against the outlaws and hit big jackpots. Net Poker: The Home Game -- now available at http://basicgames.folff.com -- from Eastland Entertainment and Trax Productions.

Rich: And now, Jay and Matt try to stay in the game in 5-Card Poker -- because the cup's at stake! Back to Doug Morris and Net Poker.

(audience applause)

Doug: Well, not quite -- but that's the cup photo that Matt and I were talking about earlier. Welcome back to Net Poker. Time for the elimination round of the game. The theme for tonight's 5-Card Poker is...

THE FRAME GAME

Doug: ...The Frame Game. Now this is the first time we've tried this theme. So let me explain.

We'll put on the video screen three frames and place words in the first and last frames. The objective is to identify the mystery word in the center. Correctly identifying the mystery word results in two different two-word phrases.

Deej, ready to play a sample?

D.J.: Huh? Oh yes. (audience laughs)

Doug: Hope you enjoyed the nap -- 'cause here's a sample.

DRAW
POKER
CHIP

Doug: We have Draw, the mystery word and Chip. What goes in the center frame?

D.J.: Could it be -- poker?

Doug: It is. Draw poker. Poker chip. We'll do one more.

BANANA
???
DECISION

Doug: Banana, the mystery word, Decision. And the word here is?

D.J.: Split -- a word I'm all too familiar with.

(audience laughs)

Doug: After four divorces, I guess I should be thankful she has her sense of humor. Now either of the two-word phrases could also be identities of people, places or things.

Now, every time you chime in and correctly identify the word in the center frame, you earn 10 points and the right to choose one of two up cards for your poker hand. As always, the card you decline goes to your opponent.

After you each have four cards, we'll play a 15-point blind card question with the frames. Player with the better hand earns 25 points. But remember, it's the player with the better *score* that wins the round -- and goes on to play against Todd for all the marbles.

The scores have been reset to zero. Matt cut the cards during the break because he was in second place at the end of Video Poker. Let's see the first cards of the round.

D.J.: We start with the 9 of Clubs and the Ace of Diamonds.

Doug: Yin and the yang starting off the round. And here we go with the first set of frames. Remember, all you have to do is tell us what word should go in the middle frame.

FLOKATI
???
DOCTOR

(Jay buzzes in)

Doug: Jay.

Jay: Rug

Doug: That's it.

MATT
JAY

(audience applause)

Doug: I wonder if a flokati rug and a Rug Doctor rental are among today's parting gifts? (light laughter from the crowd) Which card, Jay?

Jay: The ace!

Doug: As if I had to ask.

MATT

JAY

Doug: And I do have to ask -- since it's in my contract. Two more cards, please.

D.J.: The King of Hearts and the 9 of Diamonds.

Doug: All right, next frames.

ABRAHAM
???
LOGS

(Jay buzzes in)

Doug: Jay.

Jay: Lincoln

Doug: That's the word -- and you lead 20 to nothing. (audience applause) I'm not even going to ask if a Lincoln's among the parting gifts. (light laughter from the crowd) But I will ask -- which card, Jay?

Jay: Gotta take the 9.

Doug: Oh, sure, *now* take the 9.

MATT

JAY

Doug: Matt gets a cowboy out of that exchange -- and we get two more cards.

D.J.: The King of Spades and the Queen of Diamonds.

Doug: Matt could get a pair. Jay could still be working on a flush. All depends on how these next frames play out. Let's see 'em.

TAKE
???
BITS

(Jay buzzes in)

Doug: Jay.

Jay: Bacon?

Doug: Sorry, not the right word. Matt, chance to steal.

Matt: two

Doug: That's right.

MATT
JAY

(audience applause)

Doug: Take two. Two bits. Matt takes 10 points on that steal -- as well as a card.

Matt: king

MATT

JAY

Doug: Matt now with a pair of cowboys. Jay with three Diamonds. Any more Diamonds, Deej?

(a few woos from the crowd)

D.J.: Yes. The King of Diamonds -- and the King of Clubs.

Doug: Wow. Matt is assured of trip Kings going into the blind card question. Jay could have four Diamonds. But remember, it's the player with the better score that wins the round. Next frames, please.

DOWN
???
CAROLINA

(Matt buzzes in)

Doug: Matt.

Matt: South

Doug: That's right. (audience applause) Tied at 20. Which cowboy do we add, Matt?

Matt: King of Diamonds

Doug: And with that...

MATT

JAY

Doug: ...the handwriting's on the wall. The best Jay can do is a pair. Matt has, at worst, three Kings. So Matt will eventually collect 25 points for the high hand and win the round.

However, let's go through the motions and bring on a chance at CY$2500. Here come the final two cards for the round.

Doug: Now the player who scores on this 15-point blind card set of frames could win the CY$2500. Here come the frames.

PREGNANT
???
BUTTON

(Jay buzzes in)

Doug: Jay.

Jay: Belly

Doug: That's a correct answer. (audience applause) I say that's *a* correct answer because "Pause" would have also fit nicely into that center frame. Pregnant pause. Pause button.

OK, Jay, for CY$2500, pick a card.

Jay: The left I suppose.

Doug: OK, do you suppose that left card's suit is Spades, Hearts, Clubs or Diamonds?

Jay: Hearts.

Doug: If it's Hearts, you have CY$2500. Let's see it, Deej.

D.J.: All right, Jay! Ace of Hearts.

(winning bells; audience applause)

Doug: That's the good news. Now the bad -- Jay ends up with a pair of Aces. Matt's still with three Kings. Matt officially wins this round.

MATT
JAY

(audience applause; Super Pay Cards round victory music plays)

Doug: By the way, what was the other card?

Doug: Ah, another Heart. Well, Jay, CY$2500 was coming your way either way. We still add CY$10 per point. This gives you a total -- and I sure don't call this losin' -- of CY$2850.

(audience applause)

Doug: All right, Matt. Your chance at CY$5000. It's hiding behind one of the letters in "POKER". Which letter?

Matt: O

Doug: The O. Let's take a look.

(rimshot; ca-ching)

Doug: Now this is odd.

MATT
JAY

(smooth jazz theme plays)

Doug: Matt wins the round -- but Jay comes away with more cyber-money. Well, the stakes will be much higher in Joker Poker when Todd rejoins us. Net Poker rolls on -- after this.

(audience applause)
