Audience Game

Before we move any further, a quick Net Poker hello to Shelia Speights.

She was one of the first widows I started networking with after my wife, Cindy, died. Shelia's getting married this weekend to a wonderful fella with a famous name -- Charlie Brown. I'm sure he's heard all the "Lucy pulled the football away from you" jokes -- so I won't repeat any here.

Many years of love and laughter -- to Charlie and Shelia.

Now on to a qualifying round for the audience game. Remember, anyone can take part -- but the three closest, high or low, get to play.

Here's the query -- which is -- sort of -- related to my earlier statement.

What percentage of people who use online dating sites are already married?

My next question -- where's "Cheaters" when you need 'em?

(time passes)

And time's up. Let's see the percentage of, well, cheaters.

QUALIFYING ANSWER
35%

(ding)

Thirty-five percent? I'm glad D.J.'s out of sight and sound for this.

(D.J. says from backstage "I heard that!")

Rats. Let's just go to the results.

Michael Clifford 30%
Matt Tanga 29%
Will Schmarder 21%

Michael, Matt and Will, your game starts shortly.

(NMG-HSH theme plays with clips from completed action from Netgame
Marathon)

Rich Jeffries: One good celebration joins another. The stars of
Netgame Marathon come to play -- as we continue to celebrate ten years
of the Net Match Game - Hollywood Squares Hour. Only on VBS.

(smooth jazz theme plays)

D.J.: Let's go to the races in our audience game. We're playing it with Michael Clifford, Matt Tanga and Will Schmarder.

MICHAEL
MATT
WILL

Doug: Thanks, Deej and welcome aboard, players. Despite the huge jackpot payoff earlier, we still have some cyber-money to give away -- and here's how. It's a game we call A Day At The Races -- and let's head over to the starting gate right now.

Doug: We have two horses in this first race -- Red Chief and Black Beauty. The race starts when D.J. starts drawing cards from a new 24-card deck. If she draws a Heart or Diamond, Red Chief advances one space on the track. If she draws a Spade or Club, Black Beauty moves a space forward.

She'll keep drawing until one of those horses crosses the finish line. If you pick the winning horse in this race, you'll either win or share in CY$3000. After two races, the player with the highest amount of cyber-money wins the game and moves on to take on the Outlaw's Video Slot Challenge.

(audience cheers)

Doug: I'm sure the outlaws are going to be after the winner of this game after the big jackpot payoff in Deuces Wild. So play carefully. Right now, I need each of you to pick a horse -- #1, Red Chief or #2, Black Beauty.

MICHAEL
MATT
WILL

Doug: And -- joy of joys, everyone's picking 1. Well, we'll have a three-way tie when this race is over -- would that it ends in a tie at 500. Deej, let's start.

("William Tell Overture" plays)

(Deej draws...)

Doug: And we're off to a good start. Red Chief off to the early lead.

Doug: King of Spades brings the horses neck and neck.

Doug: Uh oh! One more Spade or Club and we're done.

(bells ring)

Doug: Oh, bummer. (audience groans) Well that means you each win CY$50 plus another CY$25 for the one space that Red Chief advanced.

MICHAEL
MATT
WILL

Doug: So CY$75 for each of you. Let's see if we can do better with the next race. The horses are at the starting gate now.

Doug: This race pits Face The Facts against Ace The Numbers. Now when the race starts, D.J. is going to keep drawing from the same deck. In this race, if she draws any face card, Face The Facts advances one space toward the finish line; any Ace, 10 or 9 means Ace The Numbers moves one space forward.

The player who ends this race with the highest score goes on to spin against the outlaw. Remember, if necessary, we'll play a tie-breaker. So let's see if you can pick a winning horse this time.

MICHAEL
MATT
WILL

Doug: All right, Will just picks Face The Facts. The two Ms go with Ace The Numbers.

Before we start the second race, I just realized I erred. Winners collect or split CY$1500 -- not CY$3000. But I tell ya what -- since no one picked the winning horse in the last race, let's make this race worth CY$3000.

(audience cheers)

Doug: When I make a mistake, Dirty Harry from TBR pays for it!

(audience laughs)

Doug: Especially when he's not here to give us that evil stare of his. OK, Deej, let's start another race.

("William Tell Overture" plays)

Doug: And Face The Facts is off and running with the Jack of Diamonds.

Doug: Another Jack -- and already Will's one space away from victory.

(bells ring)

Doug: Woah! That was fast.

MICHAEL
MATT
WILL

Doug: Will wins the game. (audience applause; Super Pay Cards round victory music plays) CY$3075 to build on in the Outlaw's Video Slot Challenge. We'll play that shortly.

Michael, Matt, sorry your horse went nowhere fast this race. We do have CY$50 more for each of you. CY$125 -- and our great thanks for playing.

(audience applause)
