5-Card Poker

(smooth jazz theme plays)

Rich: All of tonight's players receive a copy of Net Poker: The Home Game. Make winning hands, battle against the outlaws and hit big jackpots. Net Poker: The Home Game -- now available at http://basicgames.folff.com -- from Eastland Entertainment and Trax Productions.

And now, John and Todd try to stay in the game in 5-Card Poker. Back to Doug Morris and Net Poker.

(audience applause)

Doug: Thanks, Rich. Before we start the next round, I should note the winner of the game plays for the outlaw's jackpot worth CY$80,000. (audience cheers) But before that, the winner plays for a trip and *another* jackpot payoff in the prize game. We'll explain that later.

JOHN
TODD

Doug: John, Todd, you have to win this round to be in contention for all that loot. Now, you're both new to the game -- so I should point out when a new round starts, the scores reset to zero.

The theme for tonight's 5-Card Poker is...

THE LAST WORD

Doug: ...a little something we call The Last Word. I'm going to give a series of statements -- one at a time. Each statement is false. Your objective is to chime in and make the statement a fact by changing only -- the last word. For example...

In a famous nursery rhyme, the cow jumped over the fence.

Doug: Now, Deej, how would you correct that?

D.J.: Moon.

Doug: That's right. That's all you have to do to correct the statement. We'll play one more example. Try this one, Deej...

On "The Price is Right", the bonus for a perfect bid in contestants' row is 500 elephants.

D.J.: Dollars. Five hundred elephants -- might be another show involving three doors.

(light laughter from the crowd)

Doug: OK, now that you have the idea of this round, every time you chime in and give us the correct last word, you earn 10 points and the right to select one of two up cards for your poker hand. As always, the card you decline goes to your opponent.

After you each collect four cards, we'll play a 15-point blind card statement. The player with the better hand earns 25 points. Player with the better score wins the round -- and goes on to the championship round to play against Brian for all the marbles.

John cut the cards during the break -- because he finished in second place. And let's see the first two cards of the round.

D.J.: And we're starting with the Queen of Diamonds and the 10 of Spades.

Doug: OK, here comes the first statement. Remember, you just need to correct -- the last word.

According to an old phrase, something that is clear and obvious is as plain as the nose on your aardvark.

(Todd buzzes in)

Doug: Todd.

Todd: face

Doug: Face is right.

JOHN
TODD

(audience applause)

Doug: Todd you have the first points of the round. Which card?

Todd: Give me the Q

Doug: Q as in Queen -- er, wait, this isn't Net Definition.

(light laughter from the crowd)

JOHN

TODD

Doug: Todd takes the lady, John the 10 and Deej, get me out of this.

D.J.: Heh, you and your cross-promotions.

(a few woos from the crowd)

D.J.: Hey there, the Jack of Diamonds and the Ace of Spades.

Doug: This is a good time to note the natural royal flush bonus of the car and CY$100,000 applies here. That said, here's the next statement.

The 500 miles in the Indianapolis 500 auto race are equal to 200 millimeters.

(John buzzes in)

Doug: John.

John: Kilometers

Doug: Sorry not right. Todd, chance to steal.

Todd: Laps

Doug: That's right; 200 laps around the track make 500 miles. (audience applause) Speaking of Indy, they -- gave me a Fred Scott joke to read. (tosses away card) Not going there. (light laughter from the crowd) You're up to 20, Todd. Pick a card, please.

Todd: Jack

Doug: Interesting.

JOHN

TODD

Doug: You keep your drive alive for a royal -- but you also keep John's drive alive as well. Next two cards, please.

D.J.: Well, bad news for Todd -- potential good news for John. Ace of Hearts and the Jack of Spades.

Doug: OK, perhaps we're tiptoeing toward history on Net Poker. Next statement.

Tom Brady is the quarterback for the New England Chowderheads.

(John buzzes in)

Doug: John.

John: Patriots

Doug: That's it.

JOHN
TODD

(audience applause)

Doug: Of course, these questions are prepared well in advance. As of this typing, the Super Bowl's just a few days away with the Patriots and Giants. John, you got a tough choice -- do you want the Ace and be assured of at least one pair -- or gamble on building a royal flush and take the Jack of Spades?

John: I'll take the Ace of Hearts

(audience groans)

Doug: Well, I can't say as I blame ya, John.

JOHN

TODD

Doug: You're trailing in the score right now -- but so far you have the better hand. Now, any more Spades higher than a 9 coming?

(more groans)

D.J.: Uh, yeah, the King of Spades and the Ace of Diamonds.

Doug: OK, eventually, we'll see if John kissed a car and 100-grand goodbye. Back to the game -- correct the last word of this statement...

When ordering a BLT, your sandwich will have bacon, lettuce and slices of toads.

(John buzzes in)

Doug: John.

John: Cheese

Doug: Sorry, not right. Todd, chance to steal.

Todd: Tomato

Doug: That's the right last word.

JOHN
TODD

(audience applause)

Doug: Yeah, a bacon, lettuce and toad sandwich will definitely curb your appetite. (audience laughs) Todd, which card?

Todd: Ace

Doug: Taking the Ace.

JOHN

TODD

Doug: OK, let's set the stage. John still has two Aces, Todd still with two Jacks. Todd, however, still leads in the important stat -- points. Let's bring the final two cards of the round.

Doug: This next statement is worth 15 points -- and then we award 25 points for the high hand. John, this means you have to score on this question -- because if Todd chimes in and answers correctly, there wouldn't be enough points available for you to win.

Here we go with the important statement...

Baton Rouge is the capital city of the state of Drunkeness.
