Video Poker

(FF reveal sfx)

Doug: No appreciable gain. You still score a nickel. Just for fun, what would've happened had you gone to 12?

(FF reveal sfx) (audience groans)

Doug: Oh, Michael. Your third Ace was at 12.

Doug: Well, you're going to have to hope David suffers a five-point loss. David, let's shuffle the cards for you.

(cards are shuffled on the video screen; after shuffling stops, the cards are covered immediately with the 24 numbers)

Doug: And we're set. Before you take command, share with us a bit of the David Hammond story.

David: I'm David Hammond, I work for The Welch News. Favorites include Final Fantasy, Olivia Newton-John and about any game show on TV. I'm also a netgamer, and i'm the host of 'Net JackPot and a co-host of Net Press Your Luck here on VBS.

Doug: Well, if you win this game, perhaps you'll have a different reason to stand up and yell... (points to D.J.)

D.J.: JACKPOT!

(audience laughs and applauds)

Doug: First things first, though. Five numbers, please.

David: Gimme 9, 11, 12, 19, and 24.

(FF reveal sfx)

Doug: Well, now. Just a pair of 10s. David, if you stopped here, we'd have to take five points away -- meaning you and Michael break the tie at the dice table. Of course, you're allowed to make exchanges and try to do better.

David: Well, that won't do. Throw the 9, queen, and ace back, and I'll take my chances on 4, 16 and 22 and hope for the 3rd 10.

Doug: OK. A pair of something else would help your cause, too. Any hand that ends in positive points is a win for you. Let's see what's joining your 10s.

(FF reveal sfx)

Doug: Well, you got your third 10 after all. David wins it.

(winning bells; audience applause)

Doug: Nice work, David. Now, it's time for some instant cyber-cash -- and to think you won't have to give up the lead to play for five-grand.

(light laughter from the crowd)

Doug: You also don't have to choose from a wallet either. Just from the five letters in the word "POKER". One of those letters hides CY$5000; each of the remaining letters hide lesser amounts. Which letter hides the five-large?

David: Lets see the five grand behind the R, I hope.

Doug: The letter R -- hides...

(rimshot; ca-ching) (winning bells; audience cheers)

Doug: ...the five grand!

(smooth jazz theme plays)

Doug: That's all yours to keep -- no matter how you finish in the game. Andy and Michael, if you know a spade is a gardening tool as well as one of the four suits in the deck, you'll have a leg up in our next round's theme of Double Meanings. We'll play 5-Card Poker -- after this.

(audience applause)
