5-Card Poker

(smooth jazz theme plays)

Rich: All of tonight's players receive a copy of Net Poker: The Home Game. Make winning hands, battle against the outlaws and hit big jackpots. Net Poker: The Home Game -- now available at http://basicgames.folff.com -- from Eastland Entertainment and Trax Productions. And now, Michael and Mat try to stay alive in 5-Card Poker. Back to Doug Morris and Net Poker.

(audience applause)

Doug: We're back on Net Poker. Deej is still in her mirror universe uni...

(D.J. strikes a pose; men in the crowd holler)

Doug: ...but this next round's theme has nothing to do with "Star Trek". Michael and Mat, the theme is Initial Descriptions.

INITIAL DESCRIPTIONS

Doug: I'll get to how this plays in a moment. But first, because Michael finished in second place, he cut the cards for this round for 5-Card Poker. As with Video Poker, the deck of cards we're playing with has nothing lower than a 9. The first two cards from the top of the deck will be up for grabs shortly.

Now to the matter of Initial Descriptions. Michael and Mat, I'll show you the initials of a famous person -- and then describe that person using words that start with the initial letters. For example...

P.G.

Poker Guru

...heh, appropriate. If I showed you the initials "P.G." and the description "Poker Guru", you would respond -- how, Deej?

D.J.: Gotta be one of my favorites on the pro poker circuit, Phil Gordon.

Doug: That's right. We'll try one more practice description.

B.S.

Baby Specialist

Doug: "B.S." and Baby Specialist. The answer is?

D.J.: Benjamin Spock -- who wasn't on the Enterprise.

(light laughter from the crowd)

Doug: Indeed. That was another Spock entirely. So, that's how our theme works. Now, players, each time you buzz in with the right answer, you earn 10 points and the right to pick one of the cards for your poker hand. As always, the card you decline goes to your opponent. We'll repeat this process three more times.

After you've each collected four cards, the fifth pair of cards will come face down and we'll play a 15-point blind card description.

The player who ends up with the better hand wins 25 points -- but the player with the better score wins the round and the right to play against Marc in Joker Poker.

Good luck to you both. Lt. D.J., what are the first two cards for the round?

D.J.: The 10 of Clubs and the King of Clubs.

Doug: Well, already, the issue of a natural royal flush isn't in this discussion. OK, Mat and Michael, here comes your first initial description...

D.T.

Dealmaking Tycoon

(Michael buzzes in)

Doug: Michael.

Michael: That would be my main man, Donald Trump.

Doug: I would think a guy from Jersey would get that one.

MICHAEL
MAT

(audience applause)

Doug: We should note these questions were prepared well in advance. Michael, which card.

Michael: I gotta go with the King.

Doug: King you want, King you collect...

MICHAEL

MAT

Doug: ...Mat gets a 10. Two more cards on the way.

D.J.: The 9 of Hearts and the Queen of Spades.

Doug: And let's see the next description...

F.P.

Fourteenth President

(Mat buzzes in)

Doug: Mat.

Mat: Franklin Pierce

Doug: Franklin Pierce, 14th President of the U.S. We're tied at 10. (audience applause) A 9 or a Queen, Mat?

Mat: The Queen

Doug: The lady is yours...

MICHAEL

MAT

Doug: ...Michael gets a 9 out of that exchange. Two more cards, please.

D.J.: The Queen of Hearts and the 9 of Clubs.

Doug: Interesting development. On to our next description...

B.C.

"Blockbusters" Celebrity

(Mat buzzes in)

Doug: Mat.

Mat: I watch it every weekends at 10:00 in the morning and the answer is Bill Cullens.

(Doug turns to Judge Von Erik) (JVE and even Rich shake their heads) (JVE activates buzzer)

Doug: I was afraid of that. Michael, chance to steal.

Michael: Bill Cullen

Doug: There's no "s" in his name. Sorry, Mat, but we had to rule against you. Michael earns 10 points more.

MICHAEL
MAT

(audience applause)

[NOTE FROM DOUG: We debated on this one knowing that we've accepted misspellings. But adding another letter to his name just equates to another identity. There's no "s" on the end of the name of Christopher Reeve, the late actor who played Superman in the movies, or Sally Field, a well-known actress.]

Doug: And while we're talking about "Blockbusters", we've got to give a call to the man who made the last call for both American versions of the show -- Mr. Rich Jeffries.

(audience cheers) (cut to Rich, who takes a bow)

Doug: OK, Michael, which card?

Michael: I can't let Mat get a pair of Queens, so I will take the Queen myself.

Doug: Breaking up the pair...

MICHAEL

MAT

Doug: ...you're both 3/5 of the way toward a King high straight. Let's see the next two cards.

D.J.: The Ace of Hearts and the Jack of Spades.

Doug: Well, if you end up with the Ace, your hope for the straight's broken. Either way, no player will be building on a pair going into the blind card question. Mat, here's a chance to rebound and tie the score. Next description...

W.S.

Wrote Sonnets

(Michael buzzes in)

Doug: Michael.

Michael: William Shakespeare

Doug: That's correct.

MICHAEL
MAT

(audience applause)

Doug: OK, Michael, you have the lead and the control. Want the bullet or the knave?

Michael: Mathematically, it would be better for me to take the Jack than the Ace, so I will take the Jack.

Doug: That would've been my move...

MICHAEL

MAT

Doug: ...OK, no one has a pair going into the blind card question. Michael had a shot at a straight. Mat, the best you can do is one pair. Let's bring on the final two cards for the round.

Doug: Now we'll up the stakes to 15 points. Mat, you must chime in and answer correctly in order to have a chance to win. Michael, if you score on this description, you'll put the round out of reach. Here we go with the blind card description...

S.F.

Satirical Funnyman

(Mat buzzes in)

Doug: Mat to stay alive.

Mat: the only S.F abbreviation I know is Steven Fitzgerald.

Doug: Not the right answer. Michael, if you can correctly identify the satirical funnyman, you'll win the 15 points and the round.

Michael: Stan Freberg

Doug: That's the one for the win.

MICHAEL
MAT

(winning bells; audience applause)

Doug: Nice job, Michael. You'll have a chance at CY$5000 in just a moment. Then you'll play against Marc for the championship.

Mat, you just ran into some tough luck today. On a different show with different questions and different opposition, you could've come out on top. Instead, you take home CY$10 a point for this round or CY$100 plus a delicious cupcake and our thanks for playing Net Poker. Mat Tanga everyone.

(audience applause)

Doug: OK, Michael. Chance to win CY$5000. It's hiding behind a letter in "POKER". Which letter?

Michael: E.

Doug: The E hides what?

(winning bells; audience cheers)

Doug: Found the big one!

MICHAEL
MAT

(smooth jazz theme plays)

Doug: Five-grand for you but much more at stake in Joker Poker -- after this.
