OK, August and September didn't turn out to be as bad as I thought. But pretty busy nonetheless. For your patience, I'll reward you all with a special Halloween episode of Net Poker.

That said, let's recap what happened on the last show. One show into the new season and already we have a qualifier for the second Quarter Million Playoff. Robert McBride, our current champ, hit a CY$90,000 Outlaw's Jackpot and has a tournament score of more than CY$100,000 -- thus making him eligible for QMP play. This will be his last game before the tournament win or lose because this his second defense of the championship crown.

This is Game 28 of Net Poker. So if you played in Game 25, 26 (played during the first QMP) or 27, please sit on your hands and let someone else in. The two players closest to the right answer to this question, high or low, challenge Robert. The question...

To the nearest dollar, the average American household spends how much money on Halloween candy?

Told ya this would be a Halloween themed show. Answers are due Thursday at 12noon EDT/11am CDT.

(time passes)

OK, before I reveal the answer, as I alluded to, I'm on jury duty next week. Hopefully it won't be long. I also taking a few days off work in mid-October. So, any lag time on this end should be made up weeks later. (knock wood) That said, the actual answer is...

QUALIFYING ANSWER
$44

(ding)

...44 bucks. Now, who's the closest?

Brian Henegar $25

It's Brian with 25. You and Robert play against...

Rob McMonigal $15

...ah, Rob McMonigal. Mike Klauss and I visited him in Pittsburgh in '02. BTW, Rob I'm still trying to find a deck of Guillotine cards -- not for this episode of Net Poker, it's a whole other game entirely.

Anyhoo, the Net Poker Halloween episode begins shortly.

======================================================================

Rich Jeffries: In tonight's Net Poker Halloween special, no
contestants were harmed. However, a production assistant was
decapitated by a ceiling fan in the lounge.

(audience laughs)

======================================================================

(drum roll)

Rich: This is our current champion, Robert McBride. So far, he's won two games and CY$103,100. He's already qualified for the Quarter Million Playoff. But if he wins tonight's game, his total winnings could exceed CY$250,000. See what happens on this Net Poker Halloween special.

(various scenes of haunted houses, monsters and graveyards fade one after another as the "Dark Shadows" theme plays)

Rich: (sounding eerie) Three mere mortals have dared to enter our lair -- for the card game where high hands can bring high rewards. Welcome to the Net Poker Halloween special.

(audience cheers) (thunder and lightning sfx)

(audience cheers)

Rich: And now, here's the host for our monster bash -- Count Dougula!

(audience cheers)

(Doug Morris walks from behind the video screen dressed like, you guessed it, a vampire)

Doug: Thank you, Rich Jeffries. Hellooooooo, everybody and welcome to Net Poker. If you like this costume, I wish I could say the same. To be honest, I think this costume sucks. (audience groans) It also bites. (more groans) I'm here all week -- be sure to try the witch's brew.

(audience laughs)

Doug: Well, this is our Halloween show. Our current champ, as Rich told you, is Robert McBride; already he's qualified for the Quarter Million Playoff after winning the CY$90,000 jackpot on the last program -- taking his total winnings passed that magic 100-grand barrier. Here to introduce our players is the bride of Four-ex-stein -- heh, cute -- D.J. Hamilton.

(audience cheers) (thunder and lightning sfx) (D.J. walks out wearing a bride of Frankenstein costume)

D.J.: Hi, everyone. Doug, I don't think your costume bites. The wardrobe folks did a great job.

Doug: Well, glad you like it. I don't. "Four-ex-stein" I trust is a reference to...

D.J.: (sighs) Yes it is! My four ex-husbands.

(audience laughs)

Doug: I haven't heard from them lately.

D.J.: Oh, well there's a perfectly good reason. I believe Nelson's dispatched a cameraman to the backlot here at VBS63.

(cue to image of aforementioned backlot with makeshift graveyard -- displaying four headstones with names of her ex-hubbies) (audience laughs and applauds)

Doug: Why am I not surprised. Well, who else is here for our Halloween special?

D.J.: Joining Robert on the panel are Brian Henegar and Rob McMonigal.

ROBERT
BRIAN
ROB

(audience cheers)

Doug: Thanks, D.J. We'll see you later. Robert, Brian and Rob, welcome one and all to our little Halloween party. And the theme for the first round is...

Doug: ...surprise, surprise -- Halloween. And as always, we start each of you off with 10 points.

Doug: Um -- not funny, Mr. Scorekeeper!

(light laughter from the crowd)

Doug: That's better. Players, I've got five multiple choice questions all about Halloween. Chime in with the right answer and you'll receive 10 more points. And then, we'll play for more points at the video screen.
