Video Poker

Doug: Control now passes to Eddie. Before we shuffle, tell us about yourself.

Eddie: I am a sports reporter covering colleges for a major daily. You -- er -- might have also seen me on another show or two.

D.J.: Oh, I remember you. You were on that game show with the dunce cap.

(audience laughs)

Doug: No, Deej, he wasn't on Street Smarts.

D.J.: No, I'm talking about the MTV game show.

Doug: Idiot Savants? Not that either. Before this spat continues, let's shuffle.

(cards are shuffled on the video screen; after shuffling stops, the cards are covered immediately with the 24 numbers)

Doug: OK, Eddie, the screen's ready for you. Please select five of the 24 numbered spaces.

Eddie: Hoo boy, gotta get at least some trips. Let's try 7, 10, 11, 20 and 21.

Doug: Okie doke...

(FF reveal sfx)

Doug: ...Eddie, I'm sorry to report those numbers didn't reveal helpful cards. Respectively behind 7, 10, 11, 20 and 21 are the King of Spades, 9 of Diamonds, Jack of Hearts, Ace of Hearts and 10 of Hearts.

You've got some straight potential and that would help your score. And you've got three hearts for flush potential and perhaps even a royal flush.

I'll recap the scores and then you may make exchanges. Jay's leading with 35 points, you have 20 and Robert with 30 points has yet to take possession of the screen.

Eddie: Yeah, not the best combo there. Ya know what? Let's go for the royal!

(audience cheers)

Doug: Calling your shot. OK, how do you play it?

Eddie: OK, pitching the nine and the king -- going for 1 and 17.

Doug: Number's 1 and 17. If they're both holding Hearts higher than a 9, you win 1000 points, a new car, CY$100,000 and a berth in the Quarter Million Playoff. Let's see 1 and 17.

(FF reveal sfx) (loud groans from the crowd)

Doug: Eddie, you were *SO* close. Number 17 had the King of Hearts, number 1's the Ace of Spades. We're going to add 5 points to your score because you got a pair of Aces -- but you'll not win this round.

Where was the Queen of Hearts he needed?

(FF reveal sfx) (louder groans from the crowd)

Doug: Number 2 had the lady of Hearts.

ROBERT
JAY
EDDIE

Doug: OK, try to shake it off, Eddie. Better luck in the next round of play. Robert, you need a pair of Queens, Kings or Aces to tie. Something better than that will win the round for you. Let's shuffle up the cards.

(cards are shuffled on the video screen; after shuffling stops, the cards are covered immediately with the 24 numbers)

Doug: And the board awaits you. Five numbers, please.

Robert: 1, 6, 13, 14 and 15

Doug: Let's have a look...

(FF reveal sfx)

Doug: ...hey! Two pair. Aces and Jacks with a 10. That's 10 points and a win if you want to stop here. But if you're feeling lucky, you're 2/5 of the way from a royal flush in Spades and Clubs. What's your pleasure?

Robert: I'm stopping here.

Doug: Somehow I thought you'd play it safe. You win with 40 points.

ROBERT
JAY
EDDIE

(winning bells; audience applause)

Doug: OK, Robert, chance to win CY$5000.

Doug: It's hiding behind one of the letters in the word "POKER". Of course there are lesser payoffs behind other letters. Which has the 5000?

Robert: I'll try the P.

Doug: The P. Does the P hold the big payoff?

(bing)

Doug: Nope. CY$750. Well, it's a lot better than being on the receiving end of one of Chuck Norris' roundhouse kicks.

(audience laughs)

ROBERT
JAY
EDDIE

(smooth jazz theme plays)

Doug: Robert, we'll see you later for Joker Poker. Jay and Eddie, stick around. You're about to be the first two players to experience one of our new question types on Net Poker. It's all about love and marriage. We're back after this.

(audience applause)
