Game 26's Video Poker

(FF reveal sfx)

D.J.: Dustin and Robert, you've been through this before. Matt, we're explaining this for your benefit.

When you take possession of the video screen, begin it by selecting five numbers. As with the tournament game, we have no cards lower than a 9. If you're happy with the combination, take the points associated with the hand and pass control on to another player. But, if you feel you can do better, exchange any or all cards for new ones. Remember, after two consecutive turns, you're possession ends.

D.J.: The better the hand you make, the more you will score. If you make only one pair, you must have at least Queens -- or else we have to take five points away.

Doug: And for this main game only, the bonus for making a royal flush naturally in this or any other round is worth -- the same bonus as the Quarter Million Playoff. Yes, it's that trip for every season around the world. (audience cheers) To recap, the summer is represented by Acapulco, the autumn is Vancouver, winter time means you're going to Zurich, and the spring for Paris.

And of course, CY$100,000 goes along with the trips. Matt, last goes first -- so go ahead...

Judge Von Erik: (over P.A. system) Excuse me, Doug.

Doug: Yes?

Judge Von Erik: Robert and Matt are actually tied at 20. Robert's closer to the champ -- so he goes first.

Doug: Oh -- my mistake. I misread his score at 10. (looks at wife seated in first row) Cindy, what's the name of your eye doctor again? (audience laughs) I need to make an appointment when we get home. Robert, my apologies, *you* start first.

Robert: 4, 7, 12, 14, and 17

Doug: Let's take a look...

(FF reveal sfx)

Doug: ...in a word, yuck. Pair of 9s and if you stopped here, I'd have to dock you 5 points -- so please make exchanges.

Robert: Get rid of the two nines, and pick 1 and 19.

Doug: Very well. The 9s go in the dumpster. What's replacing the 9s?

(FF reveal sfx)

Doug: Goodness. Another 9 and King. Well...

DUSTIN
ROBERT
MATT

Doug: ...you get a fiver out of that deal. We know we'll see you on the next episode -- when we play this main game's elimination round of 5-Card Poker. *Now* it's Matt's turn as we shuffle the cards...

(cards are shuffled on the video screen; after shuffling stops, the cards are covered immediately with the 24 numbers)

Doug: Now we've met Robert and Dustin on previous episodes. Matt, please introduce yourself to Mr. & Mrs. Internet.

Matt: Well, I'm a 21 year old college graduate as of this weekend, and am currently searching the radio and print job markets.

Doug: Ah, congratulations on your graduation and as someone who's worked in the media for 14 years, I wish you much luck in your job search. Go ahead and pick five numbers please.

Matt: 4, 6, 10, 17, 23

Doug: Take a look and see if there's anything good...

(FF reveal sfx)

Doug: ...pair of Aces and a pair of Kings. Worth 10 points if you were to stop -- but that would secure second place and I don't think you'd want that. Please make exchanges.

Matt: 8 for 6.

Doug: OK -- I'll take that to mean you want us to throw away the 9 of Spades that was behind 6 -- and you'll take the card at #8 instead. Let's see if that was a good trade.

(FF reveal sfx)

Doug: Oooh! A Jack.

DUSTIN
ROBERT
MATT

Doug: That gives you 10 more points -- but not enough to win this round. Dustin, in the event you lose 5 points on this possession, you'll still win this round. *But*, let's play this out anyway...

(cards are shuffled on the video screen; after shuffling stops, the cards are covered immediately with the 24 numbers)

Doug: ...and see if you can win CY$100,000 and those dream vacations.

Dustin: Let's go with 1, 14, 8, 5, and 4.

Doug: OK, let's check 'em out and see how close you are toward that royal flush...

(FF reveal sfx)

Doug: ...well, 2/5 of the way toward a royal in Clubs -- and another 2/5 of the way toward a royal in Hearts. How do you play it?

(time passes) (buzz) Oh, no decision in time. That means we'll give you the points associated with the straight and the victory in this round. (winning bells; audience applause) Now here's where we'll play our little five-grand game...

UPN AND THE WB:
BEEN NICE KNOWIN' YA

Doug: ...CY$5000 is hiding behind one of the letters in "POKER". Pick a letter. (time passes) (buzz) No decision in time. We'll just give Dustin the lowest prize on the board which is CY$500. (smooth jazz theme plays) We'll resume this game on the next show. Robert and Matt, you'll be playing 5-Card Poker to stick around. Winner there faces Dustin on the next show. Another break -- and then Andy Silikovitz goes for CY$50,000 in Deuces Wild -- after this. (audience applause)
