5-Card Poker

(smooth jazz theme plays)

Rich: All of tonight's players receive a copy of Net Poker: The Home Game. Make winning hands, battle against the outlaws and hit big jackpots. Net Poker: The Home Game -- now available at http://basicgames.folff.com -- from Eastland Entertainment and Trax Productions.

(audience applause)

Rich: And now, Michael and Jason try to stay alive in 5-Card Poker. Back to Doug Morris and Net Poker.

Doug: Thanks, Rich. And indeed it's time for the elimination round of 5-Card Poker.

During the break, Jason, who was our second-place finisher in the last round, cut the cards for this round. Again, we're dealing with every Ace, face card, 10 and 9.

The first two cards of the deck will come down the chute and I'll ask a 10-point toss-up question. Chime in with the right answer and you win the points -- plus the right to choose the left or right card for your poker hand. As always, the card you turn down goes to your opponent.

We'll play like this until you each receive four cards. Then, the fifth pair of cards will come down face down -- and we'll play a 15-point blind card question. Again, the one who scores 15 chooses one of the cards. We'll then turn the last cards face up and award 25 points to the player with the better hand.

Player with the better score wins the round and faces Dustin in Joker Poker. The runner-up in this round will be eliminated from further play.

Good luck, gentlemen. Here are the first two cards of the round.

D.J.: The Ace of Diamonds and 10 of Diamonds.

Doug: Well, already, no hope for a royal flush this round -- but there's an Ace up for grabs -- with this question...

Before becoming a U.S. senator from California, Dianne Feinstein was...
\ a mayor
\ a college basketball player
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(Michael buzzes in)

Doug: Michael.

Michael: a mayor

Doug: Of San Francisco, I believe. You're right for 10.

MICHAEL
JASON

(audience applause)

Doug: Which card -- as if I didn't know?

Michael: I'll take the Ace.

Doug: Yeah, people wanna grab those Aces early on...

MICHAEL

JASON

Doug: ...Michael's cards this round will be on the top half of the board. Jason the lower half. Now let's get two more cards.

D.J.: The 10 of Hearts and the Ace of Clubs.

Doug: Well, Jason could end up with a pair after this next question...

Lucy Liu was in the movie...
\ Chicago
\ Jerry Maguire
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(Jason buzzes in)

Doug: Jason.

Jason: All of the above

Doug: Correct for a tie score.

MICHAEL
JASON

(audience applause)

Doug: All together now -- one, two, three.

Rest of crew: (singing with Doug to the tune of "Loop de Loop")
Here we go, Lucy Liu.
Here we go, Lucy Li.
Here we go, Lucy Liu.
All on a Saturday night.

(audience laughs and applauds)

D.J.: (in her best British accent) Dreadful!

(more laughs)

Doug: Trust me, we're all better at Karaoke Night. Jason, which card?

Jason: A pair of tens isn't safe against two overcards, but I'll my chances on the 10.

MICHAEL

JASON

Doug: OK, pair of 10s for you. Michael with Ace-Queen. Two more cards, please.

D.J.: Only if you don't sing!

(audience laughs)

D.J.: Ace of Spades and the Jack of Spades.

Doug: Oooh, Michael could end up with a pair of bullets. Probably Jason would want to stop that. Next question...

Every Thanksgiving in the NFL, the ...
\ Green Bay Packers play a home game
\ Cleveland Browns play a home game
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(Jason buzzes in)

Doug: Jason.

Jason: Unless there's some kind of relocation plan I don't know about, it's got to be none of the above.

Doug: That's right.

MICHAEL
JASON

(audience applause)

Doug: Cowboys and Lions play on Thanksgiving. OK, Jason, which card?

Jason: Time to play defense. I'll want that ace.

Doug: We'll see if defense wins this championship...

MICHAEL

JASON

Doug: ...Jason still with two 10s, Michael's 3/5 of the way to a straight. Next two cards.

D.J.: The Ace of Clubs and the King of Spades.

Doug: Well, Michael, you'd still be in it either way. Next 10-pointer...

In the year 1987,...
\ Bruce Willis and Demi Moore tied the knot
\ Prince Charles and Princess Diana separated
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(Jason buzzes in)

Doug: Jason.

Jason: I need this one to control my fate. I'll say all of the above.

Doug: That's right.

MICHAEL
JASON

(audience applause)

Doug: OK, Jason, you've got the lead going into the blind card question. Which card would you like in your fourth position?

Jason: I'd like to parlay my kicker into a second pair and leave Michael with just two outs. I'll take the ace.

Doug: Ace is yours...

MICHAEL

JASON

Doug: ...and as Jason alluded to, the only way Michael can win this round is if he scores the 15 points on this question and then manages to draw a 10.

Doug: There are the blind cards and here's the 15-pointer...

When making a list of NFL quarterbacks who've thrown for at least 500 yards in one game, you must include...
\ Elvis Grbac
\ Peyton Manning
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(Jason buzzes in)

Doug: Jason for the round.

Jason: There's an obvious answer here, but my NFL recollection says otherwise. It's Elvis Grbac for the win!

Doug: That's right.

MICHAEL
JASON

(winning bells; audience applause)

Doug: Even if there's a 10 for Michael, Jason you'll still win the round. We'll play for CY$5000 shortly.

Michael, this isn't goodbye, this is just "bye for now". A technical difficulty has been brought to our attention and we're of the belief it cost you the game. So, we'll go ahead and give you ten cyber-bucks a point this round -- but we won't let this loss count against you. We'll see you on our next program as you try to go for win number three, the car and the hundred-grand.

(audience applause)

Doug: OK, Jason, you get to pick a letter in "POKER". Dustin found CY$5000 earlier. Let's see if you can too.

Jason: I tried to, as Tom Kennedy once said to Randy Amasia, "psychologically analyze this whole thing", but for now, I'm going for the wild guess. Hit me with the E, Doug.

Doug: Yeah, I hear what you're saying. I played the home game of Net Poker with some members of the crew and I tried some reverse psychology. Of course, it backfired. (audience groans) Behind the E...

(winning bells; audience cheers)

Doug: ...well, looky there!

MICHAEL
JASON

Doug: Dustin won five-grand and now you win five-grand. (smooth jazz theme plays) Well, we sure don't have any losers in this main game -- that's for sure. But still, one player will be eliminated, the other will go for CY$75,000. Joker Poker decides it all after this.

(audience applause)

[NOTE FROM DOUG: Now, in case you're wondering just what was this "technical difficulty", Michael told me he never got the Lucy Liu question when first posted. He later noted some Net Poker messages ended up in his junk mail folder. I'll take him at his word since it's happened to me -- even at work! Legit messages labeled spam.]
