Video Poker

(FF reveal sfx)

D.J.: Thanks, Doug. Michael knows this drill by now. But for the others, you'll each take up to two consecutive turns at the video screen. On your first turn, select five numbers and we'll reveal the playing cards behind them. As always on Net Poker, we play with every Ace through 9.

If you're happy with the combination you made on the first turn, take the points associated with the combination and pass control to another player. But, if you want that second turn, you may exchange any or all cards for new ones. When that second turn's over, you're stuck with it.

D.J.: And you want to be stuck with as many points as possible. If you make a hand with only two Jacks or something worse, we'll take 5 points away.

Doug: Remember, if you make a natural royal flush in this or any other round, you'll more than likely win the round -- and definitely win CY$100,000 plus this.

(new car music plays)

Rich: For your driving enjoyment, IT'S A BRAND NEW CAR! (audience cheers) Go off-road in style in this Porsche Cayenne Turbo. It comes complete with six-speed manual transmission, a 500 horsepower engine, a huge 15 square-foot sectioned glass sunroof, a rearview camera and much more.

(music fades)

Doug: And Michael, if you win this game outright, the car and the 100-grand are yours. Right now, you have a bit of a hole to climb out of. You need to make a flush or better in order to stay in the running mathematically.

Michael: I will go with 7, 10, 2, 24, & 21.

(FF reveal sfx)

Doug: And you only get a pair of Aces out of that -- worth 5 points additional. Now, you do have three diamonds. Find two more for a flush and you win 25 more; then you have to hope the others run into trouble. The two Aces with any three of a kind make a 40-point full boat. Of course, you can throw 'em all away and hope for the best on the next turn. How do you play it?

Michael: Doug, I'm going for the royal flush.

(audience cheers)

Doug: He's calling his shot, folks. Good luck, Michael. How are you going to play it?

Michael: I'll exchange the Jack of Clubs & Ace of Hearts with 15 & 19.

Doug: Very well. If you can find the other two diamonds higher than a 9 behind 15 and 19, you win 1000 points, CY$100,000, that new car, a berth in the playoff and then everything else for you will be gravy. Of course, Jason and Dustin still get a chance to score all that and a bag of chips. Is Michael going to the Quarter Million Playoff right now?

(FF reveal sfx) (Trivia Trap sfx) (audience groans)

Doug: Sorry, Michael. BTW, what did he need for the royal flush?

(FF reveal sfx)

Doug: Lady was at 11, Jack at 20.

MICHAEL
DUSTIN
JASON

Doug: All right, try to put this behind you. You won your championship by going through 5-Card and Joker. We'll see if this episode's next two rounds can pave your way to the tournament. Jason, your turn at bat as we shuffle the cards.

(cards are shuffled on the video screen; after shuffling stops, the cards are covered immediately with the 24 numbers)

Doug: Now before you take possession of the video screen, tell us about yourself.

Jason: Since my last 'netgame appearance five years ago, I was a computer programmer in Michigan, but now I'm an Indiana bum. I now provide recaps for ESPN's Around the Horn, and I've watched the card games on GSN whenever I get the chance, so I've got my poker face ready.

Doug: Well, you've come to the right place. Pick five numbers and we'll play on.

Jason: I've got to take 1 because Mom owns a dollar store, where most everything is $1. :-) For my other four numbers, I'll take...14, 5, 22, and 3 for no particular reason.

(FF reveal sfx)

Doug: Well, the dollar store gave you a Queen. The others give you only a pair of Jacks. And that's all negative five. So, you'd want to make exchanges.

Jason: Yecch, ugly hand. The best strategy is to try for trips, so let's keep the jacks. I'm hoping that 8, 17, and 20 produce another fish hook.

Doug: Very well. Let's see if you do get three Jacks out of this...

(FF reveal sfx) (Trivia Trap sfx) (audience groans)

Doug: ...you don't.

MICHAEL
DUSTIN
JASON

Doug: Well, we know Michael will play against Jason in the next round. Dustin, if you meet a fate similar to that of each of your opponents, you'll still win this round. So, let's just go ahead and shuffle the cards.

(cards are shuffled on the video screen; after shuffling stops, the cards are covered immediately with the 24 numbers)

Doug: And we'll give *you* a chance to make a royal flush. Before we do, tell Mr. and Mrs. Internet your life's story in eight sim-seconds.

Dustin: Here via the great-ish state of Ohio, where I'm the director of public relations work for a Japanese animation convention - art, press announcements, guest invitations and the like. I pay the bills by working in the hospitality biz.

Doug: Great to have you hear from Ohio. My wife and I celebrated a white Christmas near Lima -- where we're seen on VBS affiliate QLOH Metro 23. In any event, let's see if you can make a royal flush.

Dustin: For the numerical thingies... hm. Let's go with number "4" since the convention is in its fourth year... and then 9, 13, 16, and 20.

(FF reveal sfx)

Doug: Well, it's a 20-point straight. But more to the point, you have at least one of each suit. So, which suit do you want to keep in your quest for the royal flush?

Dustin: OK. Let's keep the King of Spades, discard the rest, and pick up 1, 5, 7, and 22.

Doug: OK, if those cards are all spaded and higher than a 9, you're going to the Quarter Million Playoff. Let's see 1, 5, 7 and 22.
