5-Card Poker

(smooth jazz theme plays)

Rich Jeffries: The runner-up in this round of Net Poker will receive a complimentary family four-pack of tickets to see, from Sony Pictures, Zathura. It's the exciting outer space game adventure starring Tim Robbins, Jonah Bobo and Josh Hutcherson. Zathura.

Jennifer M.: (in a clip from The Apprentice) Zenthura.

(audience laughs)

Rich: No no. Zathura.

Jennifer M.: (in another clip from The Apprentice) Zenthura.

(more laughs)

Rich: Come on. Say it right. Zathura.

Jennifer M.: (in a different clip) Zenthura!

(audience laughs)

Rich: (sighs) Back to you, Doug.

(audience applause) (theme fades)

Doug: Yeah, I wonder if she ever got tickets for that movie. Anyway, welcome back to Net Poker. Time for our challengers to duke it out in 5-Card Poker.

Doug: By virtue of his second place finish, Chris cut the cards during the break. This round involves an actual deck of 24 cards -- still Ace through 9 of everything, just like the last round.

In a moment, the first two cards of the deck will come down the chute and I'll ask a 10-point toss-up question. Chime in with the right answer and you earn the points -- plus the right to choose one of the two upcards. As always, remember the card you decline automatically goes to your opponent.

We'll play this way until you each have four cards. We'll then have the fifth pair of cards up for grabs face down and I'll ask a 15-point blind card question -- also worth control of the cards.

When the 5-card hands are complete, we'll turn those final cards face up and award 25 points to the player with the better hand. The player with the better score wins the round and advances to the final round to play against Michael for the championship.

Gus and Chris, good luck and let's begin the round with these two cards.

D.J.: And we start with the Ace of Clubs and the 9 of Clubs.

Doug: Two Clubs up for grabs. Here's the first question...

In the year 1967...
\ Yale University went co-ed
\ Apollo 12 blasted off for the moon
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(Chris buzzes in)

Doug: Chris

Chris: None of the above.

Doug: That's right.

GUS
CHRIS

(audience applause)

Doug: Yale went co-ed in '68, Apollo 12's moon mission was a year later. Chris, pick a card, please.

Chris: I'll take the Ace.

Doug: Thought you might...

GUS

CHRIS

Doug: ...Gus gets the 9 in the process. Two more cards now.

D.J.: The Ace of Hearts and the Queen of Clubs.

Doug: OK, someone's going to be 2/5 of the way toward a flush. We'll find out who after this query...

"ACE" is an acronym for...
\ All Cotton Elastic
\ Award for Cable Excellence
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(Gus buzzes in)

Doug: Gus.

Gus: All of the above.

Doug: That's it.

GUS
CHRIS

(audience applause)

Doug: All Cotton Elastic is the "ACE" in the ACE Bandage. The Awards for Cable Excellence ceased to exist some time after the Emmys allowed cable shows to compete. OK, Gus, which card?

Gus: I'll take the Ace, please.

Doug: Ace -- not as in the bandage or the defunct awards...

GUS

CHRIS

Doug: ...Ace as in the red one. Chris gets the lady out of the deal. And we get two more cards.

D.J.: The Jack of Clubs... (a few folks hoot and holler) ...and the 10 of Diamonds.

Doug: Well -- Chris could be 3/5 of the way toward a royal flush. OK, let's test your TV trivia...

Former talk show host Jenny Jones was a winner on...
\ Star Search
\ Press Your Luck
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(Chris buzzes in)

Doug: Chris.

Chris: Press Your Luck

Doug: Not right. Gus, chance to steal.

Gus: All of the above.

Doug: She won on both the game show and the talent competition. Gus gets 10 more points.

GUS
CHRIS

(audience applause)

Doug: OK, Gus, you control the cards -- and I have a feeling I know which one you'll take.

Gus: If I have any chance of winning, he cannot have that club. I'll take it then.

Doug: That's what I thought...

GUS

CHRIS

Doug: ...car goes back to the garage. And two more cards come on down the chute.

D.J.: The King of Spades and the 9 of Diamonds.

Doug: Well, Chris, hope that makes you feel better. A royal flush wasn't meant to be this go-round. OK, back to the game and this...

Alicia Silverstone was in the movie...
\ Batman
\ Clueless
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(Chris buzzes in)

Doug: Chris.

Chris: Clueless. Silverstone was in a Batman movie but not in "Batman".

Doug: Right on all counts.

GUS
CHRIS

(audience applause)

Doug: She was in Batman & Robin. OK, Chris, tie game. Which card would you like going into the blind card question?

Chris: I can't let Gus have that 9. I'll take it.

Doug: And as a result...

GUS

CHRIS

Doug: ...I don't think this has ever happened. Both players going into a blind card question with no pair and no straight draw. Well, let's set up for that blind card question...

Doug: ...fifteen points at stake and then a choice of card. Good luck, play carefully and here we go...

Actor John O'Hurley...
\ won the first Dancing With The Stars competition
\ hosted a revival of What's My Line?
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(Chris buzzes in)

Doug: Gus.

Chris: None of the above. He lost the first one, and he hosted "To Tell the Truth" in 2000.

Doug: That's all right for 15.

GUS
CHRIS

(audience applause)

Doug: OK, Gus, you control the destiny with some rather crummy hands. Do you make yours better with the left or right?

Gus: I'll take the right.

Doug: Right card it is...

GUS

CHRIS

Doug: ...and Chris gets the left. Chris, we'll start with you. You sure could use a pair. Let's see Chris' final card first.

GUS

CHRIS

Doug: Oh, King of Hearts. Still no pair. You end the round with Ace high. Gus, you end up with...

GUS

CHRIS

Doug: ...oh mercy, Ace high as well. Both players have Ace-King-Queen as their first, second and third highest cards. So we go to the fourth highest card in each hand. Gus, your Jack beats Chris' 10 for the win.

GUS
CHRIS

(winning bells; audience applause)

Doug: Well, Gus, it was an ugly win -- but the win puts you in the championship round. Standby for that. Chris, you played well. The cards just weren't falling your way. But you do receive CY$10 a point or CY$200 this round. More prizes await you backstage -- including those tickets to see Zathura.

Jennifer M.: (in another clip from The Apprentice) Zenthura.

(audience laughs)

Doug: Man alive. A nice hand for Chris J. Clark, folks.

(audience applause)

Doug: All right, Gus. Time to play for CY$5000. It's behind one of those letters in "POKER". Which one?

Gus: The O, please.

Doug: Is it all about the O? Let's see.

(bing) (audience applause)

Doug: Well, CY$2000 to spend at Overstock.com or wherever else you'd like. (smooth jazz theme plays) When we come back, Gus plays against Michael for the championship -- when Net Poker comes back after these words of interest.

(audience applause)
