Audience Game

OK, folks, we've made and minted more loot to be won. So, let's have an audience game.

Briefly, we here at Trax Productions had our own internet version of The Price is Right -- called Classified Ad Price is Right. One final time, we'll bring it back out of the mothballs for this audience game qualifier.

Below is an actual classified item -- with the asking prices intentionally censored. Here's the ad...

Furniture. Water-bed, $XXX. Bedroom set w/mattress, $XXX. Sectional sofa, $XXX. Diningroom set, $XXX. King-sized mattress, $XXX. TV, $XX. Weight machine, $XX.

...now the question, what is the combined asking price for the above items?

(time passes)

And we're done taking bids on this... um... showcase, for lack of a better term. Let's go back to the add with the actual asking prices of the items uncensored...

Furniture. Water-bed, $100. Bedroom set w/mattress, $500. Sectional sofa, $300. Diningroom set, $100 King-sized mattress, $100. TV, $30. Weight machine, $30.

...add 'em all up and you conclude that...

QUALIFYING ANSWER
$1160

(ding)

...this showcase can be yours if you have $1160 in your bank account. Who came the closest to 1160?

Michael Clifford $1250

Our current champ. Indeed this is allowed. Michael, this time you're playing against...

Matt Taylor	 $1700

...Matt Taylor with a $1700 bid and...

Brian Moore	 $1832

...back for more is Brian Moore. Aren't you glad I allowed overbids? :) More Net Poker after this.

("Bittersweet Symphony" plays)

Voice guy: Bookcase, $750. Grandfather clock, $5025. Winning those
two prizes *and* a cabin cruiser... (insert winning moment from
Golden Road here) ... priceless! Thanks Jay -- for 10 years of
priceless fun on Net Price is Right on VBS.

(smooth jazz theme plays)

D.J.: We're back with Net Poker. Time to speed things up as we play our newest audience game -- with our champ Michael and our earlier challenger Brian Moore. Joining them is Matt Taylor.

(audience cheers)

Doug: Thanks, Deej. Indeed, while we were away, we came up with a new audience game -- called Grand Prix. It's a race to 500 miles. Let's go to the big screen and show you how we play...

ACES=200 miles
FACES=100 miles
NUMBERS=50 miles
Car's odometer cannot
exceed 500 miles.

Doug: ...we have two cars in play -- a black and a red car. In a moment, D.J. will draw cards from the top of a 24-card deck -- one at a time -- and depending on the color of the suit, mileage is added to the correpsponding car.

If D.J. draws a Spade or Club, miles will be added to the black car's odometer. For Hearts or Diamonds, the red car gets some mileage.

How much mileage depends on the rank of the card. Aces are worth 200 miles each, face cards 100 and tens and nines 50. A car cannot finish the race with more than 500 miles. So, if the black car has 400 miles and she draws the Ace of Spades, that car has to stay at 400 and wait for lower Club or Spade.

Now, before the race starts, you've got to pick a winner. Pick the correct car and you'll win or share in CY$3000. After this one race, we'll go on to the Outlaw's Video Slot Challenge -- but we'll play a tie-breaker after the race and before slots if necessary.

Right now, which car do you think will win? Black or red?

(players lock in selections)

Doug: And we're all set. Michael, which card did you go with?

Michael: I'll go with black.

Doug: Michael picks black. Matt, your selection.

Matt: red

Doug: One for black and the other for red. Brian, which card do you think will win?

Brian: I'll select "red".

MICHAEL
MATT
BRIAN

Doug: OK, we're almost ready to race. Brian and Matt picked red, the champ goes with red... (D.J. hands Doug a green flag) and... well, didn't we come prepared? Gentleman, start your engines.

(engine sfx) (Doug waves the green flag) (D.J. draws cards)

Doug: And a modest begins for the red car. 10 of Diamonds adds 50 miles.

Doug: A further advance for red by 100 miles.

Doug: Woah, and an even further advance for red. Who's driving the other car? Dick Trickle?

(audience laughs)

Doug: Now its in the race. Face card for 100.

Doug: Woah, that 200-mile Ace is too much for the red car. It cannot advance more than 500 miles total. So red still leads 350 to 100.

Doug: And the black car's inching forward.

Doug: White flag's out for the red car. Fifty miles away from victory.

Doug: And *still* 50 miles away from a win.

Doug: There we are.

ACES=200 miles
FACES=100 miles
NUMBERS=50 miles
Car's odometer cannot
exceed 500 miles.

(audience applause)

Doug: And with that, Michael, unfortunately, you won't move on to the video slot challenge. However, we certainly don't have to hold any charity dinners for you. We'll give you CY$150 for the 150 miles your car traveled. This will count toward your tournament score. When you rejoin us to defend your championship, you'll try to build on your Washington trip and CY$31,150.

(audience cheers)

Doug: OK, Matt and Brian, you split the CY$3000 top prize and now we have to play a CY$50 tie-breaker -- to determine who plays the video slot challenge. Now on the video screen, the numbers 1 through 6 hide the Ace through 9 with no duplicates whatsoever.

Matt, your answer in the qualifying round was closer to the correct answer than Brian's response. So, you get first dibs at the tie-breaker board. Pick a number and hope you draw a high card.

Remember, a 9 would automatically lose and an Ace would be an instant winner.

Matt: I'll take 3.

Doug: Number 3. What's behind 3?

(bing)

Doug: A Queen. Brian, to go on to the video slot challenge, you have to draw a King or Ace. Anything lower than a Queen and Matt wins.

Brian: I'll pick 4.

Doug: Number 4. Who's going to the video slots? Is it Matt or Brian?

(bing)

Doug: It's Brian.

BRIAN

(winning bells; audience applause)

Doug: Brian, you win the high card tie-breaker. Matt, CY$1500 isn't too shabby. Thanks for playing.

(Matt and Brian shake hands) (audience applause) (Matt returns to his seat)
