5-Card Poker

Doug: And we're back with more of Net Poker. Tom plays against Stephen now in 5-Card Poker.

Doug: During the break, Tom cut the cards and in a moment, we'll see the first two cards from that deck come down the chute. I'll then ask a 10-point toss-up question.

Chime in with the right answer and you get the points plus the right to pick one of those cards. Remember, the card you turn down goes to your opponent by default.

After you each collect four cards, we'll then play a 15-point blind card question -- with the fifth pair of cards coming down the chute face down. When your hands are complete, we'll then turn the last cards face up and award 25 points to the player with the better hand.

High scoring player goes on to Joker Poker to play against Joe for the championship. The low scoring player in this round will be eliminated from further play. So, good luck and Deej, what are the first two cards?

D.J.: Before we get to the cards, I'd like to announce we have a temporary replacement series for Net Poker while Doug's away on his honeymoon.

Doug: Oh????

D.J.: Yeah. Gardening with Jesse and D.J. (audience laughs)

D.J.: The 9 of Hearts and the 10 of Diamonds.

Doug: (sighs and shakes head) The way this show's going, I'm looking forward to my time off. (more laughs) Good luck, gentlemen. BTW, it's all general knowledge the rest of the way. Here we go with the first question in the round...

When making a list of athletes who've been given nicknames by ESPN's Chris Berman, you must include...
\ Natrone Means
\ Chris Calloway
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(Tom buzzes in)

Doug: Tom.

Tom: Hmm...I'll take a stab at none of the above.

Doug: Not the right answer. Stephen, chance to steal.

Stephen: chris calloway

Doug: No, sorry. It's all of the above. Chris came up with Natrone Means "Business" and Chris "Cab" Calloway, respectively. No points are awarded and the same 9 and 10 are still up for grabs with this question...

In the world of game shows, you could see a contestant wear a dunce cap on...
\ Street Smarts
\ Idiot Savants
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(Tom buzzes in)

Doug: Tom.

Tom: Uh...I've only seen Street Smarts, so, uh, Street Smarts?

Doug: Not the right choice. Stephen, another chance to capitalize and take the points and control.

Stephen: all of the above

Doug: That's the choice.

TOM
STEPHEN

(audience applause)

Doug: On Street Smarts, you can throw a dunce cap on your opponent. And in Idiot Savants, the lowest scorer in the first round has to sit in the dunce's corner with cap in tow. OK, Stephen, you have ten points and a card coming to you. Which one?

Stephen: ill take the 10

Doug: The 10's yours...

TOM

STEPHEN

Doug: ...and Tom get the 9. We get two more cards.

D.J.: And they are the Ace of Hearts and the 9 of Spades.

Doug: High card and low card up for grabs -- as well as 10 more points with this query...

In Scrabble, assuming none of the tiles land on the special spaces...
\ the word "to" is worth 2 points
\ the word "for" is worth 4 points
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(Tom buzzes in)

Doug: Tom.

Tom: Okay, I know my Scrabble. The word "to" is worth 2 points. T and O are each a point. The letter F is 4 points by itself.

Doug: You are itching to get back to hosting here at VBS, aren't ya? (audience laughs) You're all over it and right.

TOM
STEPHEN

(audience applause)

Doug: Tie score, Tom. Which card?

Tom: As much as I hate to give that Ace away, I'll gladly take the pair.

Doug: OK, let me ask to clarify. You're taking the 9 of Spades, right?

Tom: Yes, please. :)

Doug: Very well. Deej gives you the 9...

TOM

STEPHEN

Doug: ...and Stephen gets the big ol' Ace. Two more cards on the way.

D.J.: The 10 of Hearts and the Ace of Diamonds.

(a few oohs from the crowd)

Doug: Stephen's going to get a pair of Aces or 10s soon. We'll get a better idea after this question...

The NBC News program Meet The Press...
\ is currently moderated by Chris Wallace
\ received an Emmy nomination in 1952 for Best Public Affairs Program
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(Tom buzzes in)

Doug: Tom.

Tom: I'll say none of the above.

Doug: Not the right answer. Stephen, chance to steal.

Stephen: moderated by chris wallace

Doug: Well, he was the moderator circa 1984 -- but nowadays Chris is on Fox News Sunday. The right answer -- "received an Emmy nomination in 1952 for Best Public Affairs Program. Same cards in play. New question...

The fictional character "Donkey", voiced by Eddie Murphy, was featured in...
\ the movies Shrek and Shrek 2
\ an episode of "Father of the Pride"
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(Tom buzzes in)

Doug: Tom.

Tom: I remember seeing him in commercials. It's all of the above.

Doug: That's right.

TOM
STEPHEN

(audience applause)

Doug: Not even "Donkey" could save the TV show. Oh well. Tom, which card?

Tom: No win situation for me, but I'll take the ace and give him the lower pair of the two.

Doug: Very well.

TOM

STEPHEN

Doug: Tom's working on a pair of 9s. Stephen has a pair of 10s thus far. Next pair of cards coming.

D.J.: The Ace of Spades and the King of Clubs.

(a few oohs from the crowd)

Doug: Well... the plot thickens. Someone's going to have two pair before the blind card question. Needless to say, control of the cards and these next 10 points are real important. Play carefully. Here we go...

The radio quiz show Take It or Leave It offered a top prize of...
\ $64,000 in cash
\ a trip around the world
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(Tom buzzes in)

Tom: I'm pretty sure it's none of the above.

Doug: You should be 100% sure now. That's right.

TOM
STEPHEN

(audience applause)

Doug: Take It or Leave It was worth at most not 64-grand but just 64 bucks. Tom, I think I know which card you want -- but I ask to ask.

Tom: Gimme the Ace, Doug!

Doug: Actually, D.J. will give you the Ace.

TOM

STEPHEN

Doug: They pay me to read the questions and her to touch the cards, you see. (light laughter from the crowd) So with that, it's blind card question time...

Doug: ...Stephen, you're going to have to score on this question and then hope to draw the Ace of Clubs. Tom, in your case, if you score on this question, you'll put the round mathematically out of reach. Here we go...

Debralee Scott was a cast member of the sitcom...
\ My Sister Sam
\ Angie
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(Tom buzzes in)

Doug: Tom for the round.

Tom: I can hear Johnny Olson saying it now. "And from 'Angie', Debralee Scott..." It's just "Angie."

Doug: That's right and you win the round.

TOM
STEPHEN

(winning bells; audience applause)

Doug: Stephen, even if there's an Ace in the hole, there's no way you could win the round since the blind-card question was worth 15 and the high hand 25. However, we don't send you away empty-handed. You win CY$10 for each point or CY$100. And we have great consolation prizes awaiting you backstage. Nice hand for Stephen Pallo, everyone.

(audience applause)
