5-Card Poker

(montage of exterior shots of VBS63, QRTX-CV, fade one after another as The Apprentice's boardroom music cue plays; fade in to the conference room where the players, Doug and D.J. are seated)

Doug: Welcome back as we continue the search for D.J.'s Net Poker apprentice. Seated across from D.J. and me here in the boardroom are Brian and Jay. They did not win the previous round, As a result, they will play 5-Card Poker -- where the losing player here will be... uh... eliminated.

(light laughter from the crowd)

Doug: While we're here in the boardroom, we want to thank the folks at the VBS Action News High School Quiz Bowl for letting us use their buzzer system here on the desk. In addition, our players get to see the cards in the studio on the monitors behind us. And back in Studio 63, Jess Harris is helping out in dealing the cards. Nice to see you again, Jess.

(audience applause) (Jess, wearing a black dress with spaghetti straps, waves to the crowd)

D.J.: And now, Brian and Jay, here's your task. Jay, you cut the cards before you both came into the boardroom. The first two cards of the deck will come down the chute and Doug will ask a 10-point toss-up question. If you buzz in and give the right answer, the points are yours as well the right to choose one of the two cards. Remember, the card you reject will be given to the opposition automatically.

The moment each of you have four cards face up, we'll bring out the fifth pair of cards face down and then the question will be worth 15 points. Buzz in with the right answer and you earn those points and the selection of either the left or right card.

We'll then turn those cards face up and see who has the better hand. That player with the better hand earns 25 points. The player with more points will join Robert in the final two. The loser -- gets to take a ride in a taxi.

Doug: Seriously, Brian and Jay. Good luck. Let's go to the studio and get those first two cards from Jess.

Jess: The 10 of Clubs and the Ace of Hearts.

Doug: And from here on out, it's all general trivia. First question in this round...

In college football, when making a list of USC Trojans who have won at least one Heisman Trophy, you must include...
\ Marcus Allen
\ Mike Garrett
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(Jay buzzes in)

Doug: Jay.

Jay: All of the above

Doug: Correct.

BRIAN
JAY
00
10

(audience applause)

Doug: Allen and Garrett were running backs. Other running backs to win include Charles White and O.J. Simpsons. QBs Matt Leinart and Carson Palmer were the two most recent winners. OK, Jay, which card?

Jay: I'll take the Ace, please.

Doug: I know, dumb question to ask...

BRIAN

JAY

Doug: ...but I had to ask it. Two more cards are on the way.

Jess: The Aces of Spades and the King of Clubs.

Doug: Couple of high cards at stake with the next 10-pointer...

In the '80 cartoon TV series Smurfs, you'd find...
\ Papa Smurf
\ Bennett Smurf
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(Jay buzzes in)

Doug: Jay again.

Jay: Papa Smurf

Doug: Right again.

BRIAN
JAY

(audience applause)

Doug: What was Bennett Smurf's line anyway?

(a few laughs and groans from the crowd)

D.J.: Oy oy oy! Do we have to fire the joke-writers on this show?

Doug: Well, that's the problem. No comedy writers have been hired. (audience laughs) Jay, which card?

Jay: The Ace, please.

Doug: Figured you'd like a pair of Aces...

BRIAN

JAY

Doug: ...Brian's got a couple of Clubs -- so some flush hope. Next two cards from Jess.

Jess: King of Spades and the Queen of Diamonds.

Doug: All righty. Brian, you could sure use some points here. Let's see if you score 10 with this...

James Bond got married in the movie...
\ Goldeneye
\ Dr. No
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(Brian buzzes in)

Doug: Brian.

Brian: None of the above.

Doug: There ya go.

BRIAN
JAY

(audience applause)

Doug: 007 got hitched in On Her Majesty's Secret Service. OK, Brian, you're in business now. Pick a card.

Brian: The King of Spades, please.

D.J.: Wise move.

BRIAN

JAY

Doug: And with that, Brian has a pair of Kings. Jay still has two Aces. Next cards from Jess...

Jess: 9 of Clubs and the Jack of Clubs.

Doug: Two clubs now. Brian could tie the score or Jay could pad his lead on this question...

Sammy Davis, Jr. was originally considered for the...
\ hosting gig on Wheel of Fortune
\ title role in the movie Beetlejuice
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(Brian buzzes in)

Doug: Brian.

Brian: None of the above

Doug: Not the right choice. Jay, chance to steal.

Jay: The title role on Beetlejuice.

Doug: That's it.

BRIAN
JAY

(audience applause)

Doug: BTW, E! noted in a True Hollywood Story that Altovise Davis, Mrs. Sammy, was under consideration to be the next co-hostess of Wheel of Fortune in the wake of Susan Stafford's departure. I think we all know who ended up getting that gig.

D.J.: Hey, their loss!

(audience laughs)

Doug: Jay, you've got the lead. Before WhatsHerFace's ego gets any bigger, which card?

Jay: The Jack, please.

Doug: Jack's yours...

BRIAN

JAY

Doug: And as we go to the blind card question, Brian, you'll need to score on this question to stay in contention -- or else D.J.'s sending you packing.

Doug: The blind cards are in place. Jay, if you score on this question, you wouldn't need the cards. You'd win this round on points alone. Here's the 15-pointer...

Microsoft first introduced Windows...
\ in the decade of the 1980s
\ in the year 1983
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(Brian buzzes in)

Doug: Brian.

Brian: None of the above.

Doug: Sorry, not right. Jay, chance to win the round if you can tell me.

Jay: That'd be in the decade of the 1980's.

Doug: Microsoft introduced windows in 1985. You win.

BRIAN
JAY

(audience applause)

D.J.: Brian, ten points will not get you the job here. Sorry to say, you're dismissed.

(The Apprentice elimination cue) (D.J. pays Brian CY$100) (The Apprentice piano cue ensues)

D.J.: However, you do receive CY$100 which should be enough for cab fare. Thank you.

(Brian shakes hands with Jay, D.J. and Doug; he exits the boardroom)

Doug: Jay this means you advance to compete against Robert for more cyber-money and whatever D.J.'s dream job is. First, a chance to win CY$5000 and perhaps a Jamaican holiday. Please pick a letter in the word "POKER".

Jay: I'll take the P, for PLEEEEEEEEEEASE!

Doug: Well, he said "please". So, let's reveal what's behind the P, please.

(bing)

Doug: Man, another 500. Well, does he get to go to Jamaica?

(bing)

Doug: Nope. Close though. Still, you have CY$500 and when we come back, we'll go back to the studio where Robert and Jay compete for the right to clean D.J.'s apartment.

(audience laughs)

D.J.: DOUG! Really, it's going to be much better than that. Who will succeed? Who will fail? And who will become the Net Poker apprentice? Stay tuned.

("The Apprentice" "walk to the taxi" cue plays as Brian exits the VBS63 building; doorman opens the door for him; Brian walks toward an awaiting taxi cab; he hops in; taxi drives off)

("The Apprentice" "walk up to the suite" cue plays as Jay takes his place in Studio 63 next to Robert; Doug and D.J. also walk back into the studio; fade to black)
