Audience Game

Before we start qualifying, a couple of housekeeping notes. The next Net Poker and the debut of The All-New Big Risk probably won't come 'til mid- or late February. I'm in the midst of a cross-town move and it's basically crunch time between now and then. Thanks for your patience.

So, before the Very Famous Moving Company does their stuff, let's get in an audience game. As you know, anytime we make a call for players in an audience game, anyone can try to qualify -- whether or not you've played in the main game.

The three players closest to the right answer, high or low, get to play. The question...

In the year 1972, HBO went on the air in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, with how many subscribers?

(time passes)

And there's time. How many folks were tuning in back in '72?

QUALIFYING ANSWER
365 SUBSCRIBERS

Incidentally, this is the same number of listeners The Real Rick James had on his old WQIS radio show.

(audience laughs)

And if that doesn't tell you why, I don't know what will. Um, anyway, who came the closest?

Andy Silikovitz 365

Wow! Andy, you must know your HBO history. OK, who's the next closes?

Brian W. Moore 83

Eighty-three from Brian. And joining you two is...

John Montagnino 29

...John with 29. To everyone else, thanks for playing. We're back in a bit.

======================================================================

Gary Owens: On Net Gambit with Robert McBride, there's fun and
excitement on every turn of a card as contestants play... uh...

Duck: (walking in) Blackjack.

Gary: ...that game where a face card or 10 and Ace is an automatic win.

Duck: Blackjack!

Gary: Ah, now I remember. Take it from the top again. On Net Gambit
with Robert McBride, there's fun and excitement on every turn of a
card as contestants play Vingt-et-un.

Duck: BLAAAAACK-JAAACK!!!

Gary: Only on VBS, where the winners are.

(smooth jazz theme plays)

D.J.: We're back on Net Poker. We've gone against outlaws in previous shows. But right now, Andy Silikovitz, Brian Moore and John Montagnino are going against a pirate.

JOHN

(audience applause)

Doug: Indeed they are, Deej. Players, it's time to play Pirate Poker. If you've ever played Caribbean Stud Poker, you'll have some idea of how this works. Either way, let's go ahead and deal out the cards on the video screen.

(FF reveal sfx)

Doug: OK, Andy, the computer just dealt you a pair of Kings. Brian, you have a pair of Jacks. And John, you've just been dealt two pair -- Queens and 9s.

The pirate's hand consists of five cards as well -- but you're only seeing just his first card -- the Jack of Hearts. Here's your decision -- you may go ahead and take a sure CY$250 *or* play your hand against the pirate's in the hope your hand is better that his. If your hand beats the pirate's hand, you'll win at least a share of CY$1500.

The player with the most cyber-cash after the second hand wins the right to play the Outlaw's Video Slot Challenge for CY$20,000 and a nice vacation. Right now, it's decision time -- take the 250 or challenge the pirate?

A "yes" vote means you want to challenge the pirate. A "no" vote means you'll decline challenging the pirate and take the sure CY$250.

(players lock in votes)

Doug: And we're all set. Andy, how did you vote?

Andy: I'll take the $250... 2 kings is beatable

Doug: OK, CY$250 for you. Brian, you challenging or taking 250?

Brian: I'll take CY$250.

Doug: Two folks taking the sure thing. John, you could either play for all 1500 or take 250 and make it a three way tie.

John: Challenge the Pirate

BRIAN
JOHN

Doug: OK, John's either going to take all CY$1500 or nothing. The pirate's cards will now be revealed...

(FF reveal sfx)

Doug: ...he's got just a pair. You get all CY$1500.

ANDY
BRIAN
JOHN

(audience applause)

Doug: OK, second and final hand on the way. Let's deal 'em out.

(FF reveal sfx)

Doug: Interesting scenario here. Andy, you have a pair of Jacks. Brian has a pair of 9s and John has a pair of 10s. The pirate has a Queen showing. Decision time again -- take CY$250 or challenge the dealer?

(players lock in votes)

Doug: And everyone's locked in. Andy, again, we start with your decision. Will you challenge the pirate or take 250?

Andy: I have to challenge the pirate this time

Doug: OK, we'll see how that challenge comes through later. Brian, your vote.

Brian: I'm not very confident that my hand will beat the pirates so I'm going to take the sure thing again.

Doug: Understood. You'll finish with CY$500. Not enough to qualify for the Outlaw's Video Slot Challenge. Then again, you never know what sort of risks that brings. John, you've got a big lead. What'cha gonna do?

John: take the cash

ANDY
BRIAN
JOHN

Doug: OK, so here's the deal. If Andy's hand's better than the pirate's, Andy will take all CY$1750 and then we'd play a tie-breaker between Andy and John. Otherwise, John's taking on the Outlaw's Video Slot Challenge. Let's see the rest of the pirate's hand.

(FF reveal sfx)

Doug: Oh, pair of Aces beats the 9s handily. John, you're taking on the outlaw. (winning bells; audience applause) Standby, John, we'll spin against the outlaw in a bit. Brian, again, CY$500 for your time with us. Andy, another CY$250 in your till and as you've seen, we're closer to the Quarter Million Playoff. As we told John Menjes, as soon as we find the fourth qualifier, we'll give you a holler.
