Video Poker

Doug: Thank you, ghost of Jay Stewart. Hellooooooooo everybody and welcome to Net Poker. Our contestants picked a good time to come and play. Because as our dealer just showed you, we have CY$90,000 at stake in the bonus game. If someone wins that jackpot in this episode, that player will have at least a good shot at qualifying for the Quarter Million Playoff. Here to introduce our current champ and his challengers is D.J. Hamilton.

(D.J. walks out wearing "the little black dress") (audience cheers)

D.J.: Hi, Doug. Hello everyone.

Doug: So, all 90-grand's accounted for?

D.J.: Indeed. Counted it all myself.

Doug: So, who's here to try and win all that loot?

D.J.: Playing today are Jay Converse, Stephen Pallo, and our returning champ with CY$4850, Andy Geller.

ANDY
STEPHEN
JAY

(audience cheers)

Doug: Thanks, Deej. Hello, players. Yes indeed, if you can win at least CY$10,000 in this frontgame and then CY$90,000 in the endgame, that's CY$100,000 and enough to get you into our tournament. Andy, in your case, you've got an upper hand since you're the champ with almost CY$5000 from your one win and disputed loss.

Doug: Let's start the fun with Video Poker. As we always do, we start by giving each of you 10 points...

ANDY
STEPHEN
JAY

(ding)

Doug ...and now, five toss-up questions are on the way. Each time you chime in with the right answer, you win 10 more points. After five questions, we'll go to the video screen and play for more points. Right now, the questions and we start with this...

Before hosting his controversial talk show, Jerry Springer was...
\ a broadcast journalist
\ once the mayor of Cleveland
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(Stephen buzzes in)

Doug: Stephen.

Stephen: once mayor of cleveland

Doug: Sorry, not right. Anyone else? (Andy buzzes in) Andy.

Andy: I Believe Jerry was a BROADCAST JOURNALIST

Doug: That's right.

ANDY
STEPHEN
JAY

(audience applause)

Doug: Stephen, he was mayor of an Ohio city -- but he was mayor of Cincinnati. He went to be a political reporter for a TV station there -- and quickly rose to the ranks of managing editor and lead anchorman. In any event, next question...

In the history of ESPN, Gabe Kaplan served as a...
\ host of an NFL trivia game show
\ commentator on the network's coverage of a World Series of Poker
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(Stephen buzzes in)

Doug: Stephen.

Stephen: all of the above

Doug: Got that one.

ANDY
STEPHEN
JAY

(audience applause)

Doug: ESPN recently aired a story on SportsCenter about three-time WSoP champion Stu Ungar -- whose life was tragically cut short. Gabe Kaplan was part of the ESPN broadcast team in '97 -- when Stu won his third tournament. And Gabe also hosted The NFL Trivia Game in '88 where the winning trio won tickets to Super Bowl XXIII -- where my Bengals lost to the 49ers in the last seconds. Anyhoo, Jay, let's see if you can make it a three-way tie.

In the movie E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, E.T.'s face was modeled after...
\ Albert Einstein
\ Carl Sandburg
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(Stephen buzzes in)

Doug: And Stephen's first again.

Stephen: none of the above

Doug: Not right, sorry, anyone else? (Jay buzzes in) Jay?

Jay: Carl Sandburg

Doug: Also not right. Andy, chance to take these 10 points.

Andy: I think that would be BOTH OF THE ABOVE

Doug: I'm... going to assuming you mean "all of the above" -- and that's right.

ANDY
STEPHEN
JAY

(audience applause)

Doug: E.T.'s face was modeled after Albert Einstein, Carl Sandburg as well as a pug dog. Next question...

The original U.S. version of the game show Blockbusters...
\ featured a solo player competing against a family pair
\ was hosted by Larry Blyden
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(Andy buzzes in)

Doug: Andy.

Andy: That would be .... FEATURED A SOLO PLAYER COMPETING AGAINST A FAMILY PAIR

Doug: And that would be ten more points.

ANDY
STEPHEN
JAY

(audience applause)

Doug: Twenty-point lead for the champ. One more question and we're off to the video screen.

Before hosting his CNBC talk show, Dennis Miller served as...
\ a cast member of Fridays
\ an NFL commentator for NBC
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(Jay buzzes in)

Doug: Jay.

Jay: NFL Commentator

Doug: Umm.... I'm going to have to assume you meant "an NFL commentator for NBC" -- and that's incorrect. Anyone else want to try? (Stephen buzzes in) Stephen?

Stephen: all of the above

Doug: That's also incorrect. Andy, chance to take 10.

Andy: I AM GOING TO SAY...... NONE OF THE ABOVE

Doug: No need to shout, I'm right here. (audience laughs) And that's right.

ANDY
STEPHEN
JAY

(audience applause)

Doug: You were ready to pounce on that one, Andy. Reason why it's "none of the above" is because Dennis was a cast member of Saturday Night Live and was part of the Monday Night Football broadcast team on ABC, not NBC. Before we go to the video screen, let's meet our players, starting with Jay.

Jay: I'm a 18-year-old high school graduate as of early June. Still hunting for jobs, but other than that, my life is pretty dull right now.

Doug: Well, congrats on graduating. Hang in there in terms of finding work. I can remember having a tough time making money after I graduated. Good luck in this game as well. Let's wish equal good luck to Stephen. Tell us a little about yourself.

Stephen: I'm a dietary aide/student, love game shows and DDR!

Doug: DDR. I'm assuming that's Dance Dance Revolution. I've heard great things and interesting stories about how its players have lost a lot of weight. And Andy's our current champ -- a stock broker from sunny South Florida. He's got a big lead -- but Stephen and Jay, with the right cards, you can overtake that lead. Let's go to the video screen as Deej explains where ya'll go from here.

D.J.: OK, players, you'll each take possession drawing cards from our video screen. On your first turn, you'll draw five cards. If they make up a poker hand you're happy with, take the points associated with that combination and pass possession on to the next player. However, if you want that second turn, you may trade in as many cards as you like for new ones.
