5-Card Poker

Doug: And welcome back to Net Poker. Alan and Brian are about to compete in...

Doug: ...5-Card Poker. Now, normally the second place from Video Poker finisher cuts the deck for this round. However we had a tie for second. Since Alan's the champ, we let him cut the cards during the break.

Players, as you know, we're playing with an actual deck of 24 cards in this round. This as opposed to cards from the video screen. But still, it's Ace through nine of every suit.

In a moment, D.J. will deal out the first two up cards from the deck -- and I'll ask a 10-point toss-up question. Chime in with the right answer and you win 10 points plus you get the right to pick one of the up cards for your poker hand. Remember, whatever card you turn down goes to your opponent.

After you each have four cards in hand, we'll play a 15-point "blind card" question -- where the up cards actually will be face down. After one of you scores 15 and picks a card, we'll then turn the blind cards face up and compare hands. The player with the better hand wins 25 points.

High scoring player at the end of the round will stay in the game and advance to Joker Poker. Deej, what are our first two up cards?

D.J.: We're starting with the...

D.J.: ...Jack of Clubs and the Queen of Clubs.

Doug: Well, so much for a royal flush this round. But anyhoo, here's the first question of the round. Good luck.

Actor Sean Penn appeared in...
\ Taps
\ The Thin Red Line
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(Alan buzzes in)

Doug: Alan.

Alan: all of the above

Doug: He was in both.

ALAN
BRIAN

(audience applause)

Doug: OK, champ. Which card?

Alan: take the Queen

ALAN

BRIAN

Doug: And Brian gets the Jack. We get two more cards from Deej.

D.J.: All right...

D.J.: ...there's the 9 of Hearts and the Ace of Spades.

Doug: The yin and the yang up for grabs. Next query for 10...

Musician Cat Stevens...
\ had a hit with the song "Peace Train"
\ is now known as Yusuf Islam
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(Brian buzzes in)

Doug: Brian.

Brian: None of the Above

Doug: Sorry, not right. Alan, chance to steal.

Alan: all of the above

Doug: Right.

ALAN
BRIAN

(audience applause)

Doug: Which card would you like now, as if I didn't know?

Alan: I'll take the Ace

Doug: I'd say that's an easy choice...

ALAN

BRIAN

Doug: ...but then again, you never know how the cards are going to fall. Deej has the next two cards from the top of the deck.

D.J.: The 10 of Diamonds and the Jack of Diamonds.

Doug: Mmm'kay. Brian could have a pair after this query. Once again for both of you...

The TV personality who co-hosted Real People and at least one game show is...
\ Sarah Purcell
\ Peter Billingsley
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(Brian buzzes in)

Doug: Brian.

Brian: Sarah Purcell

Doug: Correct.

ALAN
BRIAN

(audience applause)

Doug: Sarah was co-host of The Better Sex. Bill Rafferty and David Ruprecht also hosted at least one game show before or after Real People. OK, Brian, you're on the scoreboard now. Pick a card.

Brian: I'll take the Jack of Diamonds.

ALAN

BRIAN

Doug: And that means Alan gets the 10 and we get two up cards from D.J.

D.J.: OK...

D.J.: The Jack of Spades and the King of Diamonds.

Doug: OK. Interesting set up. And these questions become more important as the hands are almost complete. Next query...

Barbara Hutton married...
\ actor Cary Grant
\ two princes
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(Alan buzzes in)

Doug: Alan.

Alan: actor Cary Grant

Doug: Sorry, not right. Brian, chance to steal.

Brian: All of the above.

Doug: That's right.

ALAN
BRIAN

(audience applause)

Doug: In addition to marrying Cary Grant and a couple of princes, she was also married to a baron and a count. Of course, not all at the same time. That would be bigamy.

D.J.: But, hey, don't you think that would be big-of-all-of-us.

(audience laughs and applauds)

Doug: Uh, Deej will perform her stand-up routine this weekend at the Bonus Island Resort and Casino in Gulfport. (more laughs) Anyhoo, back to the game and Brian's selection of card.

Brian: May I please have the Jack of Spades?

Doug: Mmm... since you said "please", I suppose.

ALAN

BRIAN

Doug: And with the score tied at 20, Brian, you've put the champion in quite a situation. You have three Jacks. Alan, you'll need the Jack of Hearts, which we haven't seen, just to stay in the game. A straight will beat three of a kind. And on top of that...

Doug: ...Alan has to hope one of these blind cards is the red one-eyed Jack. As we play the blind card question, remember it's worth 15 points and the right to pick the left or right card. We'll see who wins after this question...

In Major League Baseball's 1976 World Series,...
\ the Cincinnati Reds won the championship in a four-game sweep
\ the American League was represented by the New York Yankees
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(Alan buzzes in)

Doug: Alan.

Alan: all of the above

Doug: That's right.

ALAN
BRIAN

(audience applause)

Doug: OK, Alan, you've got the lead. However, 25 points hang in the balance for the high hand. And to have a chance at the 25, you must hope one of these cards is the Heart Jack and then you have to pick it.

Alan: well I guess I can extend the life of my pinto a few more years (light laughter) left card

Doug: He's certainly being a good sport about it if the miracle doesn't come to fruition.

ALAN

BRIAN

Doug: Well, let's go ahead and reveal Alan's fifth card first -- because if it's not the remaining Jack, we'll know Brian will have the high hand. Deej, show us if Alan's about to experience the start of a miracle.

ALAN

BRIAN

Doug: Nope. Just Ace high and Brian wins the round.

ALAN
BRIAN

(winning bells; audience applause)

Doug: What was Brian's last card?

ALAN

BRIAN

Doug: Queen of Spades. Well, no help either way for Alan. Brian, you'll get to pick a letter for CY$5000 in a moment. First, to Alan, you've worn the champion's crown well and you've given us some laughs. In return, you take home our thanks, our best wishes and CY$20,350 out of our prize budget. A nice hand for Alan Timper. (audience cheers) Almost forgot to mention the extra CY$350 comes from the 35 points he scored in this round -- CY$10 a point. Now that we have that straight, Brian, it's time for you to pick a letter in "POKER" and see if you can take us for five-grand.

Brian: I'm going for the K.

Doug: The K it is. How much is Brian racking up this round?

(bing)

Doug: CY$750. (smooth jazz theme plays) And when we come back, it's Joker Poker where we'll crown a new champ and see if he can win CY$75,000. You're watching Net Poker on VBS.

(audience applause)
