Five-Card Poker

Doug: We're back on Net Poker. Time for Joe and JX to play a hand of...

FIVE-CARD

Doug: ...Five-Card Poker. Joe's been through this already. So, we're explaining this for JX's benefit. In fact, JX cut the cards during the break since he had the second-highest point total in the last round. D.J. will show us the first two cards of the deck and then I'll ask you a toss-up question. Chime in with the right answer and you win 10 points plus the right to add one of the up-cards to your hand. Whatever card you turn down goes to your opponent's hands.

After you've each collected four cards, the next two cards will be up for grabs face down and we'll then play a 15-point blind card question also worth control of the cards. After you each have collected a total of five cards, we'll turn the blind cards face up and compare hands. The player with the better hand wins 25 more points. Only the higher scoring player goes on to Joker Poker to play against Andy for the championship.

So, let's start the round with the first two up-cards from Deej.

D.J.: The Jack of Clubs and the Ace of Spades.

Doug: And the first question in this round, players, good luck...

Simon and Garfunkel had a #1 hit with the single...
\ "The Boxer"
\ "Scarborough Fair"
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(Joe buzzes in)

Doug: Joe.

Joe: None of the above

Doug: Right on.

JOE
JX

(audience applause)

Doug: The crack staff tells me "Scarborough Fair" got as high as #11 and "The Boxer" peaked at #4. Joe, which card?

Joe: Okay, Doug. Let's load up early...lemme have the .45 Automatic.

Doug: .45 Automatic?

Joe: That's the Ace, sometimes called a bullet; I tend to embelish a bit.

Doug: So I've noticed.

JOE

JX

Doug: Wonder if you've got any nicknames for the 9s and 10s in the deck. Deej, what's next?

D.J.: Well, looks like we may a theory to work. 9 of Clubs and the 10 of Diamonds.

Doug: Heh, me and my big mouth. (audience laughs) And with that, the next query...

In the year 1988...
\ China Beach debuted on TV
\ the Detroit Pistons won that year's NBA championship
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(JX buzzes in)

Doug: JX.

JX: all of the above

Doug: Not right. Joe, chance to steal the points.

Joe: the Detroit Pistons won that year's NBA championship

Doug: Nope. Sorry. This was a tricky question, I'll admit. But in the 1988 NBA Finals, the L.A. Lakers beat the Pistons for the championship. In the '89 finals, Detroit swept L.A. in four straight. So the right answer was China Beach's debut on TV. No harm, no foul, we just go on to the next question. Again, same 9 and 10 are up for grabs on this question...

The deck of cards we're currently using in this round could also be used in the game of...
\ Bridge
\ Pinochle
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(Joe buzzes in)

Doug: Joe.

Joe: Pinochle

Doug: Sorry, that's wrong. Jay, chance to steal.

JX: all of the above

Doug: Sorry. Pinochle actually uses two of every Ace, face card, 10 and 9 for a total of 48 cards whereas we're only working with 24. With Bridge, you need a full deck of 52. The deck we're using now could also be used for a game of Euchre. Again, same cards are up for grabs and here's a new 10-point question...

The word "kayak" is an example of a...
\ simile
\ palindrome
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(JX buzzes in)

Doug: JX.

JX: palindrome

Doug: There we got it!

JOE
JX

(audience applause)

Doug: Now then, which card sir?

JX: hopefully i can get some kind of flush going, 9 of clubs please

JOE

JX

Doug: OK, you're 2/5 of the way from a flush -- perhaps even a straight flush. And Deej will show us if another Club's up for grabs.

D.J.: Oh, sorry, Jay, no hope for a flush. 10 of Spades and the Queen of Diamonds.

Doug: And don't forget, 10 more important points with this question...

When you're on the Autobahn in Germany, it's illegal to...
\ run out of gas
\ have sex while driving
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(JX buzzes in)

Doug: JX.

JX: none of the above

Doug: Sorry. Not right. Joe?

Joe: run out of gas

Doug: That's right.

JOE
JX

(audience applause)

Doug: I see some of you in the audience on your cell phones making plans to visit Germany. (audience laughs) Joe, which card?

Joe: I need the pair. I'll have the Ten.

JOE

JX

Doug: Indeed. Pair of 10s for you and the next pair up for grabs from Deej.

D.J.: The Jack of Spades and the Queen of Hearts.

Doug: Well, JX is going to end up with a pair of something after this question. Will he end up 10 points richer? Let's find out...

Actor Jon Voight appeared in...
\ "Zoolander"
\ "Pearl Harbor"
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(JX buzzes in)

Doug: JX.

JX: all of the above

Doug: He was in both. You're right.

JOE
JX

(audience applause)

Doug: Tie ball-game and which card, Jay?

JX: queen of hearts

JOE

JX

Doug: And with that, Jay's working on a pair of Queens, Joe has a pair of 10s and we have a pair of blind cards to deal with.

Doug: Now, gentlemen, the question's worth 15 points but more importantly it's worth control of the cards. Remember, it's 25 points and, in this situation, the round for the better hand. Play carefully and here we go with the question...

Actor David Soul had...
\ a hit with the song "Don't Give Up On Us Baby"
\ success playing "Hutch" on "Starsky and Hutch"
\ all of the above
\ none of the above

(JX buzzes in)

Doug: JX.

JX: had a hit with "Don't Give Up On Us Baby"

Doug: Not right. Joe, chance to steal the points and the important control.

Joe: all of the above

Doug: That's right.

JOE
JX

(audience applause)

Doug: Joe, you're leading right now. But will you have the lead after this important selection of card? Will it be the left or right?

Joe: (crossing fingers) I'll have the right card.

JOE

JX

Doug: OK, we have our hands complete. Let's see who's winning 25 more points. JX, let's see your blind card first...

JOE

JX

Doug: ...another 9 for two pair. Joe, it looks like the only way you'll stay in business is if you have an Ace or 10 as the blind card. Deej, flip it over, please.

JOE

JX

Doug: Jack of Hearts. That's also two pair. So, like normal Poker, we compare the higher pair in each hand. Jay, your Queens beat Joe's Jacks. You win 25 points and the round.

(winning bells; audience applause)

Doug: JX, we'll turn you loose and play for CY$5000 in a moment. First, to Joe, we say so long with another CY$350 giving you a total of CY$450... and... (Erin the intern brings in a cake in the shape of a Spade) ...uh... Erin, what's this?

Erin: Well, we heard Joe and Jay are celebrating a birthday within one day of each other. Joe's is today and Jay's is tomorrow. So, happy birthday, guys.

(audience applause)

Doug: Wow. Did you make this yourself?

Erin: Yeah. Secret family recipe. (audience laughs)

Doug: Ah, well, at the least, let's save some for Andy after the show. JX, you'll play against Andy for the championship in Joker Poker. First, have a look at the video screen.

FIVE-CARD

Doug: Pick one of the 5 letters in "POKER" and whatever's behind the letter is our birthday present to you. It could be as much as CY$5000.

JX: O for only a month until I get my permit!

Doug: In my case it was O for "Oh (MG 98 censored sfx), look out for that other car!" (audience laughs and applauds) What's there, Mr. Computer?

FIVE-CARD

(bing)

Doug: CY$750.

JOE
JX

(smooth jazz theme plays)

Doug: Now a clarification and something for you to think about as we head to break. Earlier we mentioned "The Twist" was a #1 song for Chubby Checker in 1960 and again in 1962. In case your wondering, yes, the 1962 situation was a re-release of the song from '60. Now, here's the somethin'-somethin' for you to think about during the break. Who originally recorded "The Twist"? And, no, it wasn't Chubby. We'll have that answer and our all-deciding Joker Poker round on Net Poker. Meantime, I'm gonna have a slice of the cake. We'll be back in a moment.

(audience applause)
