Elimination Poker

Doug: Welcome back to Net Poker. It's time for our Elimination Poker round with Robert and Dean. Here's how this works. Robert, we gave you the right to cut the cards and you did that during the break.

Haley will show us the first two cards of the deck and then I'll give you a 10-point toss up question. Chime in with the correct answer and you win the 10 points plus the right to select one of the two cards to add to your hand. The card you turn down goes to your opponent. And then, Haley will show us the next two cards from the deck and play continues until each of you have four cards.

To complete your hands, Haley will display the next two cards face down and then we play a "blind card" toss up question worth 15 points and the chance to select either the left or the right card. We'll then turn the blind cards face up and the player with the better hand wins 25 more points. High scorer at the end of this round goes on to Championship Poker while the other is eliminated from the game.

Remember, much like in Video Poker, the deck we're using has 24 cards, Ace through 9 of each suit. Good luck, guys. Haley, what are the first two cards in this round?

Haley: We're starting with the Queen of Diamonds and the Ace of Clubs.

Doug: OK, and here's the first question of the round.

Allen Neuharth is the founder of what newspaper?

(Dean buzzes in)

Doug: Dean.

Dean: Total guess here, Doug...The Wall Street Journal?

Doug: No, but a good thought. Robert, any ideas?

Robert: (buzzing in) USA Today.

Doug: That's right.

ROBERT
DEAN

(audience applause)

Doug: You've got ten points and the choice of the cards.

Robert: As in the game "Card Sharks", Aces are the limit. I'll take the Ace.

ROBERT

DEAN

Doug: The Ace is yours. Robert, your hand will be on the top half of the board; Dean, the cards you possess will be on the bottom half. Haley, what are the next two cards?

Haley: We have the Queen of Hearts and the Queen of Spades.

Doug: A pair of Queens on the board. Dean's going to end up with a pair of Queens regardless after this question...

Abraham Lincoln's famous Gettysburg Address began with the words, "Four score and seven years ago..." How many years are in one score?

(Dean buzzes in)

Doug: Dean.

Dean: 20 years.

Doug: Right on! (audience applause) Which Queen would you like?

Dean: I'll stick with black Queens. Give me the Queen of Spades.

ROBERT

DEAN

Doug: Tie score. Here's the next pair of cards from Haley.

Haley: The Ace of Spades and the 9 of Diamonds.

Doug: The yin and the yang up for grabs with this next question...

On the periodic table of elements, what is the chemical symbol for gold?

(Dean buzzes in)

Doug: Dean.

Dean: Au.

Doug: Correct for 10 more points.

ROBERT
DEAN

(audience applause)

Doug: Which card, Dean?

Dean: I want to get that Ace away from Robert. Give it to me...uh, please.

Doug: Well, since you said please, we'll let you have it. :)

ROBERT

DEAN

Doug: And, Haley, *please* reveal our next cards.

Haley: (laughs) OK, the Jack of Spades and the Ace of Hearts.

Doug: Could get really interesting on this next question...

In dollars and cents, what is the highest possible losing score on the showcase showdown's big wheel on "The Price is Right"?

(Robert buzzes in)

Doug: Robert.

Robert: $1.95

Doug: Correct. (audience applause) They would rarely if ever note this. But, if a player landed on 95 cents on the first spin, spun again and hit a dollar, that's a buck-95 which is way over the dollar and certainly takes you out of the running for the fabulous showcases. Now, as if I didn't know, which card would you like, Robert?

Robert: Better take the Ace.

ROBERT

DEAN

Doug: Smart move because if Dean took that Ace, he'd have two pair and would've had the round sewn up even before the blind card question. However, Robert is working on a pair of Aces, Dean has a pair of Queens as we go to that blind card question.

Doug: Haley's dealt the final pair of cards up for grabs face down. Chime in with the right answer to this question and you score 15 points and then try to make the better hand for 25 more points. Control of the cards most import on this question...

What is the capital city of Nevada?

(Dean buzzes in)

Doug: Dean.

Dean: Carson City.

Doug: Got it!

ROBERT
DEAN

(audience applause)

Dean: Why couldn't it be Vegas?

Doug: File that under "T" for "things that make you go 'hmmmm'." Now, Dean, you lead 35 to 20 -- but choose carefully and tell me which blind card you'd like.

Dean: Left card.

Doug: The left it is. Haley, turn that card over and tell us what Dean will add to his hand, please.

Haley: It's the King of Hearts.

Doug: And as she adds that to your half of the board...

ROBERT

DEAN

Doug: ...Robert's two Aces still beat your two Queens. Robert, you win.

ROBERT
DEAN

(winning bells; audience applause)

Doug: What was the other card, Haley?

Haley: The King of Spades.

Doug: Well, you had it either way, Robert. We'll give you a chance at CY$5000 in just a moment. First, Dean, we thank you for playing the game. As a consolation prize, you take home CY$10 for every point for a total of...

ROBERT
DEAN

Doug: ...CY$350. (audience applause) Robert, it's back to the big screen for you...

Doug: ...once again, we've got five different amounts behind the five different letters in "POKER". Pick a letter and we'll pay you whatever amount lurks behind your chosen letter

Robert: The E.

Doug: The E, you say. Is five-grand there?

Doug: Nope. But the next best thing...

(smooth jazz theme plays)

ROBERT
DEAN

Doug: ...CY$2000 and you play against David when Net Poker continues.

(audience applause)
