Video Poker

Haley: Thanks, Doug. Players, you'll each take two consecutive turns at the Video Poker screen. On the first turn, you'll draw five cards by selecting any 5 of the 24 numbered spaces. Behind the numbers are the playing cards Ace through 9 of every suit. If you like the cards you drew, end your possession of the screen and pass it on to the next player. If you don't like your cards, you may exchange any or all of them for as many new ones. Whatever you get on your second turn, that's what you're stuck with.

Haley: And remember, the better your hand, the higher the mulitplication of your points. You have to get at least two pair or else you lose all your points. Doug?

Doug: Thanks, Haley. Robert, you're low man on the totem pole, you'll start first and since we have a tie for the lead, David, since your the player to my left, you'll play second and Dean's last. Robert, you've got 20 points to risk. Good luck.

Robert: 2, 5, 8, 10, 19.

Doug: OK, let's see what you drew...

Doug: Well, you've got some possibilities. You've got a pair of queens. But you're also three-fifths of the way toward a flush or even a royal flush. And you're four-fifths of he way toward a straight. But as you know, you must do better than one pair to come out of this with any points. So, something's got to give. You may discard any or all your cards for new ones.

Robert: I'll discard the 10 and the King.

Doug: OK, hanging on to the ladies and the knave. Which cards which you like in place of the cards you discarded?

Robert: I'll take 12 and 22.

Doug: 12 and 22. Do they give you something good?

(buzz)

Doug: Nope. Sorry.

DAVID
ROBERT
DEAN

Doug: One pair is worth no points. Multiplied by the 20 you had knocks you down to nil. You'll have to hope the other players zonk out and then we play a tie-breaker. David, you're up to bat as we reload the screen.

Doug: Now some or all of the cards have moved to different positions on the board. You saw an Ace of Clubs at 22; it may still be there or somewhere else. With that said, draw five cards, please.

David: Man and I thought my ladies in the Net $ale Showroom looked good Doug!

(audience laughs)

Doug: BTW, Haley, should you break the news to everyone?

Haley: Yeah, sorry guys. I'm spoken for.

(guys in the audience groan)

Doug: And that's Net Love Connection for today. (audience laughs) Back to Net Poker.

David: Okay Doug, let's hope for the best. I'll take cards 6, 15, 20, 21, 22

Doug: Well, you're in an interesting situation. Three clubs, two diamonds, two ladies. How do you play it?

David: You and your audience will think I'm nuts but I'm giving back the Ace and the 9 and hoping that the 10's are still behind #8 and #12 for a Full House

Doug: OK, interesting strategy. The Ace and 9 are back in the dumpster. How'd ya do with 8 and 12?

Doug: Just short of a full house. But two pair keeps you on the scoreboard.

DAVID
ROBERT
DEAN

(audience applause)

Doug: Two pair is worth two times the points. So, as a result, you have 60. Dean, you have to get two pair to tie, three of a kind or better to win the round. Let's reload.

Dean: Let's try 1, 5, 15, 16 and 19.

Doug: Well, a pair of Aces to start you off. Four-fifths of the way toward a straight. Remember, you need at least two pair to stay in the round.

Dean: Interesting...A three of a kind will work also.

Doug: Say, you're right! (audience laughs) Glad someone's awake!

Dean: I'll keep the Aces, drop the King, Jack and 10. And give me 3, 18 and 22.

Doug: OK, if you can draw another Ace or a pair of anything, you'll win. Let's see what 3, 18 and 22 give you...

(buzz)

Doug: Oh, Ace of Clubs decided to go somewhere else. That means you lose all your points. David, you win.

DAVID
ROBERT
DEAN

(winning bells; audience applause)

Doug: Now, David, look again to the video poker screen...
