CY$250 Round
Doug: We're about to start our first round worth CY$250. The next round pays CY$500 to the winner. Then the third round for CY$750 and, if necessary, we'll play a fourth round for CY$1250. A game is CY$1500 -- and the first player to reach that goal wins the game and a chance to play The A to Z Round for a possible CY$50,000.
Doug: Now if you manage a clean sweep and win the first three rounds, you'll play a double-header in A to Z -- and play for a potential CY$100,000.
Doug: Brian, you won the right to start -- and you'll get first crack at this definition.
Rich: What the magician did when his trick failed.
Doug: What the magician did when his trick failed. Brian, by virtue of coming the closest in the qualifying game we played before going on the air, you get to give away a letter to Todd.
Brian: I'll give to Todd the 'Z'.
Doug: No Z. Now take a letter you think you can use.
Brian: I'll take an 'R'.
Doug: Just the one.
Doug: But that does give you a chance to win the round. The first round and CY$250 are yours if you can tell me -- what the magician did when his trick failed.
Brian: No inkling yet, so I'll pass.
Doug: OK. We go to Todd. Your turn to give a letter away.
Todd: Give the V.
Doug: No V. Take a letter, now.
Todd: Pick the T.
Doug: There's just the one.
Doug: But it does give you a chance to win the round. What the magician did when his trick failed.
Todd: (shakes head) Pass.
Doug: Very well, we're back to Brian.
Brian: I'll give Todd the 'X'.
Doug: X is a good choice. There's no X. Take a letter.
Brian: I'll take the 'S'.
Doug: S as in Sam...
Doug: Last letter in the third word. You're gettin' 'em one at a time. But this gives you another shot at winning CY$250. What the magician did when his trick failed.
Brian: Still not enough information to go on, I'll pass.
Doug: All right. Over to Todd. Give away a letter.
Todd: Y.
Doug: No Y. Now take a letter.
Todd: D.
Doug: Stop me if you're heard this one...
Doug: ...but there's just the one. They're coming in small doses -- but you're still entitled to a guess. For CY$250, what the magician did when his trick failed.
Todd: pass (buzz buzz)
Doug: OK, control passes back to Brian.
Brian: I'll give Todd the 'W'.
Doug: No W. Take a letter.
Brian: I'll take the 'L'.
Doug: Have another L while you're at it.
Doug: Two L's are in the second word. Do they help you in winnning the round? What the magician did when his trick failed.
Brian: I still have no idea yet, I'll pass. (buzz buzz)
Doug: Very well. Todd, back to you.
Todd: Ooohhh I think I got it.
Doug: Well, give away a letter first.
Todd: B
Doug: There's no B. Take a letter.
Todd: H
Doug: This should help. Three H's...
Doug: ...and each H is the initial letter in three words. You have letters in all of the words. Let's see if you indeed have the CY$250 answer. What the magician did when his trick failed.
Todd: He pulled his hare out
Doug: That's right!
Doug: Big thanks to Jay Lewis for that puzzle.
BRIAN TODD Doug: Todd especially thanks Jay -- he has the early lead. Brian, the stakes go up to CY$500 in the next round. We'll get to that after we get to these.
