Audience Game

Time to punctuate this episode of Hot Dice with The Jackpot Game. As my way of saying, "Thanks for your patience following my recent extended absence due to an urgent family matter," we're going to add CY$10,000 to the jackpot. That means we have a total of CY$30,000 plus an Elvis Presley jukebox full of his CDs and a trip to Memphis in the pot. Total value -- more than CY$48,000.

If you've played in a main or audience game in this fifth episode, please sit on your hands and let someone else in on the action.

A standard deck of 52 playing cards has been shuffled and awaits your cut -- but, your cut has to be close enough to our secret number.

We've randomly chosen that secret number from 0 to 51 inclusive. To qualify for this audience game, just e-mail me a number from 0 to 51. The player closest to our lucky number wins CY$250 -- which could lead to tens of thousands more. Based on your number, we'll cut the deck that many cards deep.

(time passes)

And we're done. Let's check out the lucky number.

(ding)

It's 34. Who's the closest?

John Menjes 33

Sharp shootin', John. Off by just one. John plays for the jackpot after this.

excitement of winning CY$100,000. Join me, David Hammond, for all
the fun of Net Spin-off -- only VBS.

Doug: And we're back. John Menjes has won the right to play for our audience jackpot. John, we're starting you off with CY$250.

(ding)

Doug: Now, during the break, we had you cut a standard deck of 52 playing cards. We then placed the first seven cards from the top of the deck accordingly behind the letters in the word "JACKPOT".

In a moment, we'll show you the card behind the J -- and then you'll bet whether the next card up the line is higher or lower.

Keep in mind you must bet in increments of CY$25 -- and you must wager at least half your score. A correct prediction or tie cards mean you win your bet. A wrong prediction means you lose what you ventured. Aces are high, deuces are low.

Bet your way across the board -- until you reach your goal, it's mathematically impossible to reach the goal or you run out of cyber-money. And the goal to hit the jackpot is...

("Celebrity Sweepstakes" tabulation sfx)

Doug: ...a rather easy CY$2800. And if you score CY$2800, you'll also score all this.

Scarlett: The prizes in this package are a hunka, hunka burnin' love, baby. They're all related to the King of Rock 'n' Roll, Elvis Presley. And it starts with this collection of Elvis CD's -- all conviently stored in this jukebox!

(audience applause)

Scarlett: This jukebox, complete with the king's signature, flashes back to the golden days of rock 'n' roll. Comes with a remote control, 200-CD capacity, ten internal speakers and a certificate of authenticity.

And when you're done listening to Elvis's music, visit his mansion in historic Memphis, Tennessee.

(audience cheers)

Scarlett: You and a guest will fly round trip coach to Memphis for a six-night stay at a luxury hotel -- which, for your sake, is not located at the end of Lonely Street. Plus, you'll have a guided tour of Graceland and a private concert by an Elvis impersonator.

Plus, we're throwing in a king-sized payoff of CY$30,000 -- to make this jackpot worth -- CY$48,050.

(audience cheers)

Doug: That's right, we added CY$10,000 to the jackpot since the last Jackpot Game.

To give you an even better chance of hitting the jackpot, I'm going to give you one chance to quadruple you CY$250 -- if you can accurately predict the suit of the card that's behind the J. Do you think it's a Spade, Heart, Club or Diamond?

John: I'll say it's a diamond.

Doug: Diamonds, he says. Diamonds, he gets?

(ding) (audience cheers)

Doug: YES! John, not just any Diamond -- but it's the 2 of Diamonds. Remember, Aces are high, 2s are low, ties pay -- so -- huh? -- oh -- of *course* you want to bet it all higher.

(a few laughs from the crowd)

(ding) (mix of applause, cheers and groans from the crowd)

Doug: Well, it's higher -- but now you have to play off a 9. You must bet at least CY$1000 the next card in line is higher or lower.

John: CY$1,000 lower, please.

Doug: Betting half lower. If it is lower, you hit the jackpot with CY$200 to spare. Flip it around, fellers.

(buzz) (audience groans)

Doug: Sorry, it was higher. But you're playing off the Ace and ties pay off -- so -- yeah -- *of course* you're shooting the works lower.

(a few laughs from the crowd)

(ding) (audience cheers)

Doug: A *three*. Nice. Now, John, it's possible to lose on the next card. So I'm not going to make the decision for you. You've got to make it yourself.

John: CY$1,000 higher, please.

Doug: A grand higher. The nice thing about this is *if* the next card's a 2, you go back down to CY$1000 -- only to automatically rebound with the next card. But if it's a 3 or more, you hit the jackpot. Does he win the jackpot here?

(dings; audience cheers)

Doug: It's a 10! You've exceeded the goal. *Now* -- you still have two cards left. If you like, you can stop the game right here and take our Elvis jackpot -- or keep playing and try to win more cyber-money.

If you play on and finish with less than CY$2800, you keep whatever cyber-money you've won -- but you lose the jackpot. What do you do?

(audience shouts suggestions)

John: I will stop right here.

Doug: Good move!

(dings; alarm sounds; audience applause; win music plays)

Doug: Man, we've had some big winners today. The other audience game was worth more than 30-grand, Will Schmarder left the main competition with a six-figure total -- and, John, by stopping here, you have won a total of...

(audience cheers)

Doug: ...CY$51,050. Congratulations. Michael Clifford will rejoin us on the next show -- as he looks to add to his winnings of CY$7800. Until then, make it a great day, keep the faith and treasure your loved ones.
