Qualifying Question

Welcome to Episode 4 of Hot Dice. Eddie Timanus is still playing the game and has banked a grand total of CY$74,750. However, he currently has one loss against him.

We're looking for someone to oppose him in the next game. Given the quirks of the rules, if you've played against him already in a main game of Hot Dice, please sit on your hands and let someone else in on the game.

Time for qualifying. The player closest to the right answer, high or low, challenges Eddie.

On October 13, 2011 at 7:00pm, we watched a rerun of "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?" on The Hub; this episode originally aired during the show's first syndicated season. The contestant in this episode won at least $500 in cash (read: no consolation prize). Out of a possible $250,000, how much did the contestant actually win? Given their scoring system, please respond in increments of $500.

(time passes)

And that's time. Let's see how the player did, first.

After a setback or two, the contestant won $11,500.

He declined a bonus question on Social Studies. The "what if" proved he knew the flag of Cuba.

Oh well -- who's the closest?

Joseph Bohan	$12,500
Will Schmarder	$12,500

(Greed tie sfx)

Egads! A tie! Rule says the player who locked in sooner takes the edge. Who dat?

Will Schmarder	$12,500

It's Will. Sorry, Joseph. Thanks to all for another great turnout in qualifying and -- uh -- oh, yeah -- there's a rumor going 'round a car's at stake in our first audience game of the episode. Keep watchin'.

Voice guy: VBS -- where the winners are.

Scarlett Gray: Win big until you lose twice.
That's how we roll here on Hot Dice.

Scarlett: From CDM Enterprises, a division of Trax Productions, here's your host for Hot Dice, Doug Morris.

(audience cheers)

Doug: I thank you, Scarlett. Helloooooo, everybody and welcome to Hot Dice. If you were with us on the last show, you know our big winner was denied a chance at the Mega Roll.

However, he's still here and if he strings together three more wins, he'll roll for CY$1,000,000. But, we have an opponent who wants to end to his winning ways.

The lovely Scarlett will tell us who came to play tonight.

Scarlett: Returning with winnings of CY$74,750, a sportswriter from Virginia, Eddie Timanus. And challenging him is Will Schmarder.

(audience cheers)

Doug: Eddie, welcome back; Will, welcome aboard. Will, since you're assured in playing our next game, we'll take a moment and chat with you later. Let's go ahead and set up for *this* game.

Doug: In Hot Dice, the object is to win a toss-up question and then build a pot of cyber-money by rolling the dice.

After we play six rounds, we go to a catch-up round. The player who banks more cyber-money at the end of the catch-up round wins the game.

You keep playing until you lose two games. And if you win four consecutive games, you roll for a million.

Players, hands on the buzzers -- because here's the first question of the game.
